INSPIRING!!! EYE-OPENING!!! INSIGHTFUL!!!

I just finished reading this book by Rabbi Kushner. It was an easy book to read and understand. I recently experienced the loss of my beloved brother. He was 36 years old and a murder victim. I am a practicing Catholic and I never questioned God. However, I found myself wondering why this had to happen to us. My brother was just an innocent bystander. A victim of being at that wrong place at the wrong time. Rabbi Kushner's book opened my eyes. His book offered me comfort and let me understand my faith a little better.
I highly recommend this book to all who question God. If you find yourself asking, "How could there be a God when bad things happen to good people?" get this book ASAP!! Rabbi Kushner offers a logical and intelligent answer to this question. He makes sense. If you think you are not a religious person this book will change that.
I am passing this book onto my mother. I know this will bring her comfort.
Thank you Rabbi Kushner for this wonderful insightful book. It has helped me with my grieving!

A unique perspective

The basic argument of the book is that bad things happen to good people because of others' poor choices and/or bad luck. Underlying this argument is the author's belief that God is powerless to stop (and therefore not responsible for) the tragedies we encounter in life. Whether this is comforting or not, I'm not sure, but it's an interesting perspective that raises interesting questions about the nature of God and His role in the universe, as belief in an omnipotent God is fundamental to many religious traditions. Regardless of whether one agrees with this argument, the author motivated it well enough to keep me engaged and keep me thinking about it after it ended.

Very comforting

Very comforting book for those who have lost a loved one or suffered through trauma. The author is a well-known Jewish rabbi, who, in my opinion, must have a direct connection to the man upstairs. And I am Roman Catholic! This book helped our family through the sudden loss of my husband's father in 1999. I reread it in 2016, after losing my own father who suffered terribly with heartbreaking dementia. And then I sent this book to all my siblings to help ease their grief.

To ask what remains of woman after the sacrifice of her being is to signal a new era in the feminist struggle, changing the terms of the battle to go beyond both essentialism and anti-essentialism.

Forgotten Genius

Steele MacKaye was one of the most important figures in 19th-Century American theater but he's almost forgotten today. This is his first modern biography -- but it was worth the wait. Sokalski tells the tale of MacKaye's extraordinary innovations in theater and theatrical spectacle -- he's the guy that turned Buffalo Bill's Wild West into a real show -- all of which anticipated cinema practice in one way or another. MacKaye didn't live long enough to see the birth of the movies, but studying his work you can see the aesthetic currents that made the invention of cinema almost inevitable. This is an essential contribution to American cultural studies.

I should add that the book has been published in a handsome edition by McGill-Queens University Press -- with a sturdy sewn binding and numerous well-chosen illustrations. All books should be made this way!

A few published errors but overall pretty good

I purchased the book for a course I am taking. Whilst it is a great source of information, it is ironic that, as a book on transcription and the importance of grammar, spelling, etc., it contains quite a few spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. The accompanying CD, which contains various support material, also contains errors and omissions.

Graphics are well done and chapter organisation is sensible. Overall, not a bad text if you can overlook the minor errors.

I never thought I'd hate a book this much

I never thought I'd hate a book this much. It's not the topic and I didnt expect it to be an easy read either but the whole thing feels like its been copy and pasted together, I get that its the eighth edition but can ya at least make the illustrations your writing about be on the same page you are referring them to? I will only keep this book because its required by my instructor, but if given the option I will NEVER own another book written by richard j fowler!

You will not believe the information and tips and tricks Jack gives in his books. MYSTERY OF MAKING IT is the most crammed with ingormation. If I could buy only one that is the one I would choose. But, I bought all of the 6 others when I started reading Mystery,because I didn't want to miss anything Jack had to say. I will eventually get to ordering his Texas History books, but right now I need the information in the art series to sink in to being automatic pilot for me.
Do not hesitate to purchade any of his book !!! All are worth more than you are payihhng!!!
He is mostwilling to share of anyone I have ever known.

About the Author
Larry Eugene Jones is Professor of History at Canisius College, New York. After receiving his PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1970, he held a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Bonn and a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung Foundation at the University of the Ruhr in Bochum. His book, German Liberalism and the Dissolution of the Weimar Party System, 1919-1933 (1988), received a prize from the German Studies Association as the best book in history and political science over the preceding two years. He has since received major grants from the National Endowment of the Humanities, the National Humanities Center, the German Marshall Fund, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the American Philosophical Society, and the German Academic Exchange Service. He has edited and coedited a number of books, most recently The German Right in the Weimar Republic (2014).

Wonderfully written and thoroughly researched

This book is a masterpiece. Wonderfully written and thoroughly researched. Am personally a World-War-Two buff and I've read hundreds of books on the subject. One might ask after all this time, how much one can read about Hitler's Germany? But this superb study proves there's still much to learn. I read Mr Jones fine book eagerly plus i highly recommend it.
