A beloved classic of American Zen

This is a collection of talks by one of the first Zen teachers in the U.S. If you're already practicing Zen, I highly recommend this book. If you're new to Zen, you might love this book or you might find it largely incomprehensible, or maybe both. Suzuki makes liberal use of the paradoxical language that is typical of Zen--e.g., "For us, complete perfection is not different from imperfection. The eternal exists because of non-eternal existence." If you'd prefer a more ordinary, explanatory style, I recommend Charlotte Joko Beck's "Everyday Zen." If you're looking for practical instruction in Zen meditation, you'll find it in "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," but you might prefer either Philip Kapleau's "The Three Pillars of Zen," which includes more detailed instructions and illustrations of sitting postures, or Cheri Huber's instructional video "The Secret Is There Are No Secrets."

When I first read "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," for a college class on Buddhism, I wasn't quite sure what to make of it, but I did end up practicing Zen, and maybe this book had something to do with that. For many years, even while living at a Zen monastery, I suspected that a lot of the enthusiasm for this book was an "emperor's new clothes" phenomenon: a few respected people said it was wonderful, so then everybody said it was wonderful. I figured its aura of profundity was due in large part to Suzuki's congruence with our archetype of mountaintop gurus--the short sentences and limited English vocabulary, and the paradoxical language that sounds deep even though nobody actually knows what the heck it means. More recently, I've come to think that the emperor really does have clothes and that the big issues of human life are hard to talk about without paradox, and this is now one of my favorite Zen books.

A Wonderful Piece, All You'll Ever Need

This book took me out of the maze of faith-based religion and for the first time I found a teacher and a philosophy with so much credibility I had the confidence to trust in the more esoteric aspects of a teaching that weren't initially obvious. Suzuki, and I assume Zen in general, has the wisdom and courage to acknowedge that there are things about our universe that we cannot comprehend and treat them as both beautiful and mysterious. This contrasts with faith-based religions which instruct us to accept notions of "gods" and elaborate tales for explanation and as such are a complete assault on and violation of the intellect. Zen outlook which does away with the largely western notions of right & wrong, past and future, and states of lack will put one squarely in the present tense from moment to moment. It is utterly refreshing and healthy to look at the universe through glasses which are not colored by human desire and ego. Read this book, gain an understanding of yourself, an appreciation for the universe as a whole and piece of mind. Namaste

Misleading title for a possibly great book

I do not want to detract from this book's worth or wisdom in any way. No doubt the glowing reviews reflect the book's significance to the lives of those who have read and UNDERSTOOD it.

My only caveat is that for complete novices--like myself--the title is misleading, and therefore the book's teachings were not very accessible to me. The term "beginner's mind," as used in this work, refers to the idea of maintaining an open, childlike mind, and never acting or feeling as though one has ACHIEVED enlightenment. Be always searching, always growing.

"Beginner's mind" should NOT be taken as an indication that this is a book for those like myself who are newcomers to the study of Zen (i.e. "beginners"). Maybe you're an "old soul," but new to Zen, in which case, you may get more out of this book than I currently do.

As someone who instinctively feels that Zen has something BIG to offer me if only I can understand what the hell the books on Zen are talking about, this is NOT a good introduction. Zen terminology is thrown around as though I already know what the terms mean. The description of poses (without benefit of pictures) is confusing, and I must admit that I [shallowly?] found myself ticked off: if I couldn't figure out a stinking pose (or even get BEYOND the fact that I couldn't figure it out), how on earth was I "deep enough" to get my foot on the path to enlightenment?

For anyone who, like myself, needs something a little more concrete to get me started, something I can sink my literal Western teeth into, this ain't the book! I believe I personally need something a little less esoteric to start with, a book that bridges the gap between my VERY literal-minded Western upbringing and the much LESS literal mindset required of adherents of eastern religion/philosophy.

I also believe that if I am able to bridge that gap (using other resources), THEN I will be able to appreciate this book's teachings and will certainly come back to it.

Mediocre. Start with the Real ACT Prep Guide, then supplement with Barron's.

I am a Harvard grad and SAT perfect scorer who has been tutoring the ACT for nearly 20 years.

There are plenty of ACT strategy guides out there, and Kaplan’s is not the worst, but it’s definitely not the best, either.

When preparing for the ACT, the very first place you should start is with the Real ACT Prep Guide. Despite its flaws, it’s the only source of official ACT questions you can buy at retail (you can also download 4 additional free ACT online—see below). The Real ACT Prep Guide (Book + Bonus Online Content), (Reprint) (Official Act Prep Guide) As a general rule, try to practice on real ACT questions whenever possible.

There is also a new edition available for pre-order, with 3 updated tests: The Official ACT Prep Guide, 2016 - 2017

Secondly, although it does help to have a strategy supplement for the ACT, the Kaplan book is far from my first choice. Instead I prefer the Barron’s book: Barron's ACT, 2nd Edition (Barron's Act (Book Only))

This Book vs. The Real ACT Prep Guide:

This book:
1) includes strategy
2) practice questions are not real and often unrealistic
3) 8 practice tests, but only 3 in the book (5 are online, which is silly for a paper-based test)
4) includes answer explanations to only 1 test

The Real ACT Prep Guide:
1) does not include strategy (use Barron's for this)
2) practice questions are from real ACTs (very important!)
3) 5 practice tests, all included in the book. 4 other real ACTs are available to download for free online (google "ACT Action Plan - McElroy Tutoring" for more information, as well as my personal, frequently updated recommendations for ACT prep.)
4) includes full answer explanations to all tests

The More Complete 2016-2017 ACT Prep Book

Our family now owns and have skimmed, read fully or used three different brands of ACT prep books. When looking for an ACT prep book the first choice is what brand to choose, the second is which one of the multiple that Kaplan publishes for the same test year do you want. Kaplan does a lot of updates so be careful to buy the correct year. It is not easy to tell the difference from the content of one to the other, for example I do not understand what makes the Kaplan ACT 2016-2017 books different than the Kaplan ACT 2016 books.

So, for 2016-2016 Kaplan has published two offereings. This one, "Premier" is the more expensive of the two, being about 110% higher of MSRP. But the price of these books is nothing compared to the test prep classes that some companies offer. This Premier product offers: 8 total practice tests (5 online and 3 in teh book). It has full explanation of the answers for ONE test. It has a DVD and written strategies in the book. The less expensive 2016-2017 book has 6 tests and no DVD.

Premier is almost three inches thick which can seem overwhelming. Kaplan has tried to help by offering a quick start guide which is the first page you see when you open the book's cover. You register the book online, and they recommend you use the online diagnostic test to help you find areas of strength and weakness. The book explains what the ACT test is like and gives ideas of how to best prep. There are live online sessions which you can register for one month before your test date. They recommend you watch the online lessons on the website. They recomend taking an online practice test to be followed up by using the hard copy book for practice and to learn more strategies.

As with all books for test prep for use at home alone the learner who is self-motivated and internally driven with good time management skills will get the most out of this resource. Students who are not so disciplined would do better by being in a class. Kaplan pushes you via their website to pay to take their online classes. Not all students do well with online classes and virtual experiences, some do better with live in person local classes that somehow are easier to not skip or forget about attending than online classes. Sitting in a classroom forces a student to pay attention vs. a teen sitting alone in a room in their house where they may be tempted to multitask with texting etc.

Kaplan always offers a money back guarantee with a higher sccore guaranteed and I hate their policy. First of all the refund is only given within 90 days of the purchase of the book so this leaves test prep to be the last 30-45 days or so before the test date because you have to wait 4-6 weeks for your test result to be revealed to you to see if you qualify for this refund. Also if using the book for the second or third time taking the test you are not eligible for the refund. They also require that you mail this heavy book back to them to get the refund and produce your original sales receipt, so don't lose it! This type of money back guarantee is too short and for that reason I ding the book down to 4 stars = I Like It. The policy is written in the inside of the front cover and I had to read it carefully to understand it so advertising on the front and back cover for a too-short time period is disingenuous to me.

Book is well done (math and science answers are clear) BUT online access requires you to give up a LOT of information.

I am on my second kid taking these tests, so a many of these books have been through my house.

First of all, I find it supremely irritating when you buy a product and you MUST fill out a huge amount of information to access the online content. Online registration requires you to find a certain word on a certain page. This book requires you to give name, email, address, phone number, current school, and graduation year. I tried to register without this and the program will not allow you to continue until you cough up this info. If the kid is under 18 the parent ALSO must create an account, in fact it forced me to do this even though I registered as graduating in 1975, which would clearly make me older than 18. Minus one star right there. Then you have to read a page long Enrollment agreement which includes allowing them to use your data with new business partners AND has an arbitration waiver. Minus another star. This effectively means that we will not be using the online portion of the program.

This book has issue I have found common with many of these review books, they tout “x” number of review questions but a large proportion are only available online (For this particular book 3 of the tests on in the book and 5 are online)

Personally I prefer ALL the questions in a book, even if that means it is huge and weighs a ton. That way I can check my kid’s answers later and talk to them about why they missed the problem. Or they can come and ask me later. Online means either they do not know why they missed the question, cannot remember what they missed.

Now on to the actual book.

The section on previewing the ACT is good, it gives the student an outline of what to expect, how many questions on what topics and how long the student has to complete that section.

I am more qualified to review the math and science sections rather than the English section. The explanations for the answers for the math sections were actually some of the best I have seen in any of the half dozen plus review books I have reviewed. Actual explanations were given and were clear. Kudos to the team who wrote the math answers. The science answers were also better than average (although the science section on the ACT is really more about interpreting graphs than real science but that has nothing to do with the book) They generally did an good job.
The included DVD had sections that some students might find useful (however my junior was rolling her eyes at the cheesy graphics), although it will not play through, you must go back to the menu and chose each section.

For the price the book is worth it and if you are willing to give a whole bunch of info to Kaplan you can access the online information. If Kaplan decides to let you register just with an email and a password and skips the pages of legalese in order to access the online portion I will give them back one star. One should not have to provide a huge amount of information in order to access content that has already been paid for when the book is purchased.

So five stars for the book (I was pleased with the outlay) and zero stars for the online portion.

Note:
*The “money back” guarantee for a higher score is nonsense. First of all, if you take a test a second time you tend to do better (familiarity with the test). Even random fluctuations may have you end up with a “higher “ (but not significantly higher) score. And should your score not increase, you only have 90 days to get a refund, and you have to explain why you did not find it helpful. Since that gives you less than 3 months to study, take the test, get the results and write an explanation and mail it, I doubt they have to make good on many of these guarantees. In fact, I find the guarantee disingenuous and irritating. It reminds me of the rebate forms designed to be so difficult to complete that most people do not bother.

Divided into two sections, "The Game" and "The Players," this comprehensive and opinionated tome describes the evolution of the sport over the decades (uniforms in the 1890s, best minor league teams of the 1930s, the Negro Leagues, etc.) and the characteristics of its players (stats, injuries, habits and proclivities). The thumbnail player sketches in the second section (the 100 greatest players at each position) vary widely in content and tone: the entry on Lefty Gomez includes a page on his public-speaking abilities, while of Kevin Brown, James merely writes, "I don't root for him, either, but he is a great pitcher." (James has assigned the rankings according to a statistical rating formula he calls Win Shares, which he explains conceptually and mathematically.) The game section, though, is the standout. It may not contain detailed statistical leaders or standings for each year, or even who won each World Series, but it does offer information on new stadiums, the competitiveness of different leagues and shifts in the way the game was played. True to form, James's new Historical Baseball Abstract is filled with often fascinating and frequently quirky evaluations and insights regarding the history of baseball. Starting with the 1870s, James explores, decade by decade, how and where the game was played and who played it. He discusses nicknames, top minor-league teams, and the most admirable superstars, among other matters. At the close of the initial 13 chapters, the author highlights each ten-year period "in a box," with a player or two tagged as the best-looking, the ugliest, the fastest, the slowest, and so forth. The last half of the book presents James's evaluations of the top 100 or more players at each position. Some are expected, with Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, for example, deemed the top first basemen. But Hank Greenberg is slotted in only at eighth place, and then James spends most of his time ragging on the great slugger's performance as the Cleveland Indians' general manager from 1949 to 1957. In other instances, the description of a player's on-field antics is melded with curious social commentary. The game has always been a number-cruncher's delight, but James' Baseball Abstract and its progency have taken statistical analysis to a new level. One of his main contributions is context: Is a .300 batting average compiled in a season when the overall league average is .280 as praiseworthy as it is in a year when the league average is .250? In this revised edition of the Historical Abstract, he focuses, in two major sections, on "The Game" and "The Players." In the former, he examines trends, oddities, and myths decade by decade. James' appeal has never been limited to his numbers; he is also an engaging writer whose prose is enlivened with humor, the telling anecdote, and more than a touch of whimsy. (See his comments on the growth in the 1930s of nasty nicknames: Ernie "Schnozz" Lombardi, Henry "Stinky" Davis, "Dim" Dom Dallesandro. In the second section, he ranks the 100 all-time best players at each position, something others have done but few with the style or compelling logic that James brings to the task. The Ultimate Baseball Book.

If you are a baseball fanatic, if you love statistics, if you love nostalgia, then you'll absolutely love this book. My son loves all things baseball, and this book gives him hours and hours of baseball lore and statistics to ponder over. This is definitely for the passionate baseball fan, not for the casual reader. If you love baseball, baseball history, and baseball statistics, this is the book for you.

But Only 4 for the Kindle Edition

I just got the Kindle version of this book. I already had it in harcover and I already had the first edition of the book. I want to comment on the Kindle-izing of the book first and then I have a few things to say about the book itself.
It is great to have this book on my Kindle. This is a great book to dip into when you want to take a break from your current reading. It is an important reference/resouce when analyzing or talking about baseball. But it is so physically big that it usually isn't there when you want to look at it. You just can't lug this monster around in case you need it.
On the other hand, some of that advantage is lost because the formatting into the Kindle version was far from perfect. The boxes where various matters are cordoned off from the main flow of the text are here just inserted and break up the text. I enjoyed every one of the boxes but I didn't stop reading the major articles to read them. I read them separately.
And this is only the second edition. There are stories and ideas absent from this edition that were vital. The distinction between peak and career value, and the brilliant essay showing how Mays and Mantle illustrated that distinction, were worth the price of admission. I can go back and read that in the first edition but it would be great to have it on my Kindle and people who don't have the first edition are going to miss it.
The Win Shares method he introduces, a way to evaluate ballplayers past and present, is ingenious and worth quite a lot. But I would hate to trade some of the stories and essays from the first edition for it.

Baseball Immortality

After reading "Moneyball" by Michael Lewis, I believed I had struck major league nirvana. I didn't believe I would ever find a baseball book to equal it.

With every bit of respect to Mr Lewis, Bill James 1000 page abstract is every bit the superior read to "Moneyball". The breadth of Mr. James historical knowledge, and his salient social observations combine with his knack for storytelling to make this an eye-opening, funny, treasure trove of baseball knowledge.

He ranks the 100 best players at each position by virtue of a metric he has invented called a win-share. Furthermore, he has developed an algebraic formula whereby he can project players performances in the dead-ball eras into the live ball eras, and give comparable stats.

Some of the player mini bios are sad, some hilarious, and some incredibly thoughtful. He interjects his experience as a Kansas City Athletic fan, and later, a Royal fan.

The most interesting comparisons are in the pitching category, as there is so much completion from the top to bottom. The choices in the infield get thin down past number 50.

The statistical performances are but a backdrop to each players actual value. There are some legitimate surprises. Jimmy Wynn is rated #10 in left field, despite a .250 lifetime batting average.

Mercifully, this book was written in the late 1990"s, before the ugliness of the steroid scandal skewed the real player values and lifetime achievements. At this writing, the damage done to baseball is just being sorted out from this chemical imbalance.

I salute Mr. James for putting this in print, and if I met him tomorrow, would only be able to say "Wow!!".

About the Author

Charles Miller

Vern Heeren grew up in the Sacramento Valley of California. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics, with a minor in physics, at Occidental College, and completing his Master of Arts degree in mathematics at the University of California, Davis, he began a 38-year teaching career at American River College, teaching math and a little physics. He coauthored Mathematical Ideas in 1968 with office mate Charles Miller, and he has enjoyed researching and revising it over the years. It has been a joy for him to complete the thirteenth edition, along with long time coauthor John Hornsby, and now also with son Christopher. These days, besides pursuing his mathematical interests, Vern enjoys spending time with his wife Carole and their family, exploring the wonders of nature near their home in central Oregon.

John Hornsby joined the author team of Margaret Lial, Charles Miller, and Vern Heeren in 1988. In 1990, the sixth edition of Mathematical Ideas became the first of nearly 150 titles he has coauthored for Scott Foresman, HarperCollins, Addison-Wesley, and Pearson in the years that have followed. His books cover the areas of developmental and college algebra, precalculus, trigonometry, and mathematics for the liberal arts. He is a native and resident of New Roads, Louisiana.

Christopher Heeren is a native of Sacramento, California. While studying engineering in college, he had an opportunity to teach a math class at a local high school, and this sparked both a passion for teaching and a change of major. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree, both in mathematics, from California State University�—Sacramento. Chris has taught mathematics at the middle school, high school, and college levels, and he currently teaches at American River College in Sacramento. He has a continuing interest in using technology to bring mathematics to life. When not writing, teaching, or preparing to teach, Chris enjoys spending time with his lovely wife Heather and their three children (and two dogs and a guinea pig).

Excellent Foundational Text

I have the fifth edition of the text, which is now in its eight edition. This is an excellent book, and it is very entertaining to read--a description that does not fit many mathematics textbooks. Although geared for students without much math background, it is an enjoyable read for all, with its engaging sidebars, its sense of the history, and believe it or not, a sense of humor (for instance, a problem requiring you to create a Venn diagram for the topics of country songs--truckers, prison and love).

A a philosopher, it is refreshing that the first 100 pages are devoted to set theory and logic--something that is not focused on often enough in basic courses. Most topics are likewise presented with a philosophical angle--for example, the first page points out the problems with defining "set." Utlimately, all definitions of set are circular--does this make "set" undisputably axiomatic? These kinds of problems are at least implied throughout the text. The effect is as deligtful as it is rare. You are not given the sense that the subject matter is complete, instead you are inspired to solve the dilemmas. While the incompleteness and conundrums are common knowledge to mathematics graduate students, they are not frequently imparted to students taking basic courses.

That is a shame. When I was in high school, I felt turned off from math--as did many of my friends, because it was presented as a dry, static subject. Memorizing formulas and theorems was like memorizing the Gettysburg Address. Mathematical Ideas does the opposite--it shows an open door for creative problem solving and makes you hungry to explore.

Suprisingly Great!

I thought that this was a fabulous book for an overview of mathematics concepts. The explanations were clear and the problems throughout each chapter and the chapter reviews were excellent practice questions for the Teachers Examination for my state (GA). Fantastic book!!

Great Textbook (Kindle Version)

This is a pretty great textbook, as far as textbooks go. Most mathematics books, in my experience, are not the best, but this book does a great job of explaining the materials, providing interesting historical/background information, giving lots of examples to work through, as well as staying relevant with current events. It even has a neat "extension" section on Cryptography.

I've had Discrete Math as part of my Computer Science curriculum at a University, and was surprised to see how much of that information is duplicated in a lower-level Liberal Arts Mathematics course. I highly recommend this book, if you are interested in basic mathematics principals (which a lot of curricula seem to gloss over in favor of hack-n-slash shortcuts for standardized tests) or if you are a student of Computer Science, the material is particularly relevant with sections on problem solving, Boolean logic, and conversion between number bases (binary, octal, hex -- all good to know for programmers).

The Kindle version overall is quite good, but note that there are restrictions on which devices can use it (as it is "formatted for larger screens"). I was only able to use the book with Kindle for PC. The Cloud Reader and my Kindle Touch could not open the book, but it seem to work on my Google Nexus 10. Hope this information helps.
