About the Author
Tracy Hogg cared for babies and their families for over 24 years. She trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital and continued her education in midwifery and caring for newborns at St James' Hospital in Leeds and St Catherine's Hospital, Doncaster. In 1993 she moved to the US, where her uncanny ability to understand and calm babies led to her nickname 'The Baby Whisperer'. Melinda Blau is an award-winning writer specialising in family and health topics. She is the author of seven other books and countless magazine articles and is the mother of two grown-up children.

Practical solutions to various problems

If Tracy Hogg's first book 'Secrets of the Baby Whisperer' provides a great introduction to overall parenting, this book gives very specific solutions to specific problems. However, I did not find some of the suggestions that much helpful as I became more discouraged when I felt like I am doing all I can and our baby is really not falling under the approach she describes. I kept thinking, what am I doing wrong that our baby is not doing what she says all these other babies do!? For example, when our baby started to take short naps and it really messed up his 3 hour E.A.S.Y routine, I kept trying to put him back to sleep and he wouldn’t as he wasn’t as tired anymore. When reading her book, it made me feel like it is because I am not timing perfectly or not staying long enough for Shush-patting. Eventually, after reading ‘Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child’, I felt much better knowing that babies do develop sleep patterns over time, and I may just have to accept the fact that he is taking short naps and move on. Overall, I do think that the book provides some practical solutions to various problems moms may encounter as we hone our skills during our first few months.

Great book that actually teaches parents how to schedule a baby

Best, most comprehensive baby book. Full of helpful tips and tricks! Down-to-earth and practical. Used it for both my sons, and they are now great sleepers and enjoy the benefits of a predictable schedule, which this book helped us put into place. She goes into great detail about how to teach a toddler to sleep through the night (along with many other issues older babies and toddlers may have). It is much harder when they are older, but it can be done, and she has detailed plans that will get you there. Hogg mentions that if you do the things in this book early in your baby's life, you will not need the book when they are older (and still don't sleep through the night at 9 months, or still nurse to sleep at 12 months, for instance). In our experience, she is correct. We got both our boys on her schedule system from a couple of months on, and we did not need the book for very long. Our youngest is one. I haven't referred to this book in 6 months because he has a solid schedule and good eating and sleeping habits, thanks to this book.

This book saved our sanity! We started reading this book when our son was around 2 months old, and he was sleeping through the night by 3 months old! The sleep training information was priceless! Now, you have to be consistent and it takes a lot of effort in the beginning, but if you follow her instructions....in the end this book will save you so many sleepless nights! That's worth every penny!!

It is intended as a definitive reference for obstetrics, from physiology to pathology.

Audience

The audience includes anyone in the field of obstetrics, although residents and physicians may derive the most benefit. This has been an essential book in obstetrics and the newest edition is no exception. The authors are leaders in the field.

Features

The book is easily broken down into smaller areas – physiology, prenatal care, intrapartum care, complicated pregnancies, coexisting disease, and legal and ethical issues. This breakdown is very helpful, as readers can easily find a chapter with the desired information… The images are excellent, including ones carried over from the previous editions… An increased emphasis on evidence-based medicine is apparent. One excellent example is in the multiple gestation chapter, which deals head-on with controversial topics such as cerclage, progesterone, and cervical length screening and even recommends potential strategies. As many new residents will turn to this book as their primary learning source, it is important to teach the incorporation of study results into obstetrical practice. This is beautifully done here.

Assessment

This edition continues the book's wonderful tradition as a primary learning tool in obstetrics. It is exhaustive yet topical and provides trainees with excellent examples of incorporating evidence-based medicine. A wonderful resource.

Excellent starting resource as an intern. Plenty of information and the organization in the chapters allows for reading in chunks so you can learn something no matter how much time you have.

Excellent book. Very detailed. Very thorough. Easy to read. Concise as well as precise. Comprehensive summaries at the end of each chapter are very helpful as are the diagrams and the various tables.

The Grand Georgette

This book was voted one of the 400 best novels ever to come out of the 20th century; chosen out of Heyer's entire oeuvre to represent the best of her work. They made the best choice. Heyer invented a genre, that of the Regency Romance, which became cheapened by countless imitators and emulators as well as many very good authors who got lost among the dross and the sweeping statements which consigned the Regency Romance to an undeservedly low-rated place. The Grand Sophy shows Heyer at her very best - it is a outrageously funny book that still has me laughing out loud (I had to stop reading it on the train because other passengers began to complain), it presents a cast of strongly drawn and complex characters, premier among whom is the titular Sophy - Sophia Stanton-Lacy, the irrepressible, indefagitable young woman with a personality the size of all England. From her extravagant arrival at her aunt and uncle's house accompanied by a monkey, a parrot, an Italian greyhound, and a very fine horse - to say nothing of her strong managing nature and charisma, she takes her rather hare-brained cousins in hand, sorting out their entanglements, scandals and romantic peccadilloes in a helter-skelter way. A book for those who always know the best for everyone else, unless you don't want to encourage them. It is a fast-moving, extravagantly amusing, richly detailed and satisfyingly convoluted novel in which Heyer skilfully draws myriad loose ends together with an incredible lightness and sureness of hand - her great talent. Many imitators tend to do so with too heavy and ponderous a style. Buy, borrow or beg this novel - but don't read it in public unless you're good at suppressing laughter. And even better - unlike several of Heyer's best novels, where the language can be somewhat offputting, this book is among one of the most immediately accessible for the novice to Heyer.

A tangle of romances - and only one woman can fix it!

The Grand Sophy has always been one of Heyer's most popular books, and for good reasons. The main character, Sophy, is so confident, fun and extremely likeable - she is almost irresistable. It is also one of Heyer's more complex plots with a number of problems, mostly romantic to be resolved - and it is only in the last few pages that all is made clear.
Sophy, the 'little' neice of Lady Ombersley is sent to London to stay with her aunt. However, somewhere in the decade or so since her aunt last saw her, Sophy has grown into a rather tall, imposing woman, with a personality to match. She is good-natured, sociable, and utterly independent. She soon has the Ombersley household in the palm of her hand - well all except Charles, the eldest son who takes a rather dim view of her. Charles's pious fiancee, Eugenia Wraxton, is also not impressed by her and attempts to bring her into line with London manners - but Sophy, with unimpaired good-manners and immense charm usually manages to get her own way.
Having established herself in the Ombersley Household Sophy soon sees how much they need her. Charles is clearly about marry the wrong woman (Eugenia), his sister, Cecilia is caught up with a clearly unsuitbale poet, and younger brother has Hubert trapped in some clearly dark sort of activity which he cannot escape from. At the same time Sophy's soon to be mother-in-law, Sancia looks to be straying herself.
Sophy's ability to orchestrate this huge cast of characters all to fitting ends is truly marvellous - and highly enjoyable.

First and most beloved

A neighbor put this book (in paperback) into my hands in the summer of 1972 as I was preparing to move overseas with my family. Thus began a wonderful, lifelong relationship with Georgette Heyer's marvelous characters. I have read and re-read this paperback, which I still own, so many times that it is held together with a rubber band. I don't read any other romance novels - I am a sci fi/history buff - and the few other "regency" novels I've read by other authors are inferior, poorly written, fluffy drivel compared with GH's work. But this is superb. Read it and laugh along with the brilliant Sophia Stanton-Lacy!

About the Author
Richard George Adams (born 9 May, 1920) is an English novelist best known as the author of Watership Down.

Watership Down has become a modern classic and won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize in 1972.

The Finest Fantasy Yet Written

Don't freak out and spout the Tolkien line.....Mr. Hobbit is still the King and I love his work as much as everyone. However, one on one, Maia transcends any single work of fantasy by any author. The richness of storytelling, the depth of submersion you will slip into this story and the absolute believability of the world Mr. Adams has created is absolutely breathtaking.
I don't believe in giving a synopsis of the story. I'm a book fanatic and pitch my tent in the camp that believes a recommendation is good enough. If I for instance had based my decision of whether or not to read this book on a synopsis of the story....well, I wouldn't have read it. Good God I'm lucky I didn't. Instead I'll ask a question. You of course know the feeling of having just finished a book you enjoyed reading. Well, have you been lucky enough to (rarely, even for book fanatics) experience the `tears in your eyes' joy of having just read a book that you actually feel lucky to have found? I mean those very few times that, having just closed the book after reading the last page, you actually notice a few minutes later that you've been sitting there, in silence, still clutching this thing that's all at once no longer just paper and ink bound by glue? Yeah? Well that almost describes the soul deep satisfaction I feel each and every time I read this book.....and I'm not one that usually ever feels the need to read a book twice no matter how much I enjoyed it.
Go out of your way to find this book. I mean get in your car and scout used book stores. And then once you've found it, buy at least two more. I'm not joking. Always keep two for yourself in case one falls apart (trust me, you'll understand the feeling). That third copy.....share it. Please share it. It's just too damn good not to.

Epic complexity and beauty illuminate this masterpiece

Adams's Maia rivals the "greats" in its ability to create an entire world of believable characters, religions, and politics. The complex world in which the novel's action takes place is breath-taking. The novel actually serves as a prequel to Adams' previous endeavor, Shardik (itself an underrated and beautiful work), but Adams takes his Beklan Empire to new levels of epic sophistication with the introduction of the naive and good-hearted Maia; the grotesque and unforgettable Sencho; the wise and gutsy Occula; and the erotic, ambitious, and evil Fornis. Perhaps the only works of fiction more encompassing and completely original in their creation of an entirely new reality are Frank Herbert's Dune novels; however, Adams work maintains a beauty and sensitivity that is lacking in those science fiction giants. Overall I have to rank Maia as one of my all-time favorite works of fiction. I have read it three times and have to stop myself from picking it up again too soon in order to preserve the rewarding pleasure I receive from reentering Adams amazing world.

An epic story about a slave girl's odyssey in Bekla.

This is an absolutely amazing novel about a beautiful peasant girl, Maia, who is sold into slavery and becomes a concubine in the household of the High Counselor of the Leopard regime. The Leopards are the upper ruling class of the semi-barbaric Beklan empire, an ancient, beautiful, and sometimes deadly city. Along the way, Maia is befriended by Occula, an exotic slave girl, and unwittingly becomes involved in a plot to overthrow the Leopard regime. This book combines political intrigue, a quest for identity, a struggle for freedom, and this remarkable girl's search for her one true love, Zen-Kurel. Richard Adams is a master storyteller, and reading one of his works is like "being woven into a tapestry". His descriptions of the Beklan empire, his intricate plot lines, his attention to detail, and his use of subtle humor, all make this a story worth reading, and one you'll come back to time and again.

INSPIRING!!! EYE-OPENING!!! INSIGHTFUL!!!

I just finished reading this book by Rabbi Kushner. It was an easy book to read and understand. I recently experienced the loss of my beloved brother. He was 36 years old and a murder victim. I am a practicing Catholic and I never questioned God. However, I found myself wondering why this had to happen to us. My brother was just an innocent bystander. A victim of being at that wrong place at the wrong time. Rabbi Kushner's book opened my eyes. His book offered me comfort and let me understand my faith a little better.
I highly recommend this book to all who question God. If you find yourself asking, "How could there be a God when bad things happen to good people?" get this book ASAP!! Rabbi Kushner offers a logical and intelligent answer to this question. He makes sense. If you think you are not a religious person this book will change that.
I am passing this book onto my mother. I know this will bring her comfort.
Thank you Rabbi Kushner for this wonderful insightful book. It has helped me with my grieving!

A unique perspective

The basic argument of the book is that bad things happen to good people because of others' poor choices and/or bad luck. Underlying this argument is the author's belief that God is powerless to stop (and therefore not responsible for) the tragedies we encounter in life. Whether this is comforting or not, I'm not sure, but it's an interesting perspective that raises interesting questions about the nature of God and His role in the universe, as belief in an omnipotent God is fundamental to many religious traditions. Regardless of whether one agrees with this argument, the author motivated it well enough to keep me engaged and keep me thinking about it after it ended.

Very comforting

Very comforting book for those who have lost a loved one or suffered through trauma. The author is a well-known Jewish rabbi, who, in my opinion, must have a direct connection to the man upstairs. And I am Roman Catholic! This book helped our family through the sudden loss of my husband's father in 1999. I reread it in 2016, after losing my own father who suffered terribly with heartbreaking dementia. And then I sent this book to all my siblings to help ease their grief.
