While obviously expensive (as text books always are), I'm not a huge fan of loose leaf books. I do like that this has basically the books for 2 semesters of courses in one (at my school-Accounting 101 and 102) so that helps ease the expense a bit.

Not the Best Source of the Gauls/Celts

This book is in French. It was disappointing- I expected a new authoritative source on Gallic warfare based on a synthesis of previous research, but with novel elements gleaned from recent archaeological finds. What the book contains is a rather hackneyed rehashing of old knowledge, and amateur black & white photos of reenactors (of questionable accuracy). There are maps & diagrams- but crudely made on a home computer. Weapon & helmets are mostly drawings or reenactor gear. Despite the carnyx featured on the cover- the book fails to cover any information about them! Overall it reads & looks like a poor college research paper. Skip it & seek "The World of the Celts", by Simon James.The World of the Celts

Subsurface Transport and Fate Processes

I've used this book when researching abiotic and biotic processes and for modeling transport and fate processes. Chapter 8 covers the applications of transport and fate information with tracer studies, remedial technologies (i.e., cyclic pumping) movement of LNAPLs into the subsurface. Appendix A presents physical, chemical and fate data for priority pollutants which I have found helpful. Overall this is a good text and is a useful reference.

About the Author
Author of the iconic novel The Thirty-Nine Steps, John Buchan filled many roles including barrister, colonial administrator, publisher, Director of Intelligence, and Member of Parliament. The Thirty-Nine Steps, first in the Richard Hannay series, is widely regarded as the starting point for espionage fiction and was written to pass time while Buchan recovered from an illness. During the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan wrote propaganda for the British war effort, combining his skills as author and politician. In 1935 Buchan was appointed the 15th Governor General of Canada and established the Governor General s Literacy Award. Buchan was enthusiastic about literacy and the evolution of Canadian culture. He died in 1940 and received a state funeral in Canada before his ashes were returned to the United Kingdom.

Love Those "Club Tales" Anthologies

I first became aware of author John Buchan not through his chase epic THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS - but through some of his
supernatural stories justly praised in H.P. Lovecraft's SUPERNATURAL
HORROR IN LITERATURE. It was only in later years that I came
across THE RUNAGATES CLUB where these tales first appeared.

Buchan's collection hearkens back to those "manly" times
when men of stature, boldness and favor gathered together on
foggy nights, to quaff fine liquor and dazzle each other with
accounts of their adventures.

(This genre was carried on to even better effect with Lord
Dunsany's delightful "Jorkens" collections, Asimov's entertaining
TALES OF THE BLACK WIDOWERS, Arthur C. Clarke's "White Hart"
musings, and L. Sprague de Camp's GAVAGAN'S BAR sf/fantasies.)

In RUNAGATES, each one of Buchan's heroes from his other novels
tell some witty, exciting, even downright uneasy tales.
Richard Hannay speaks of a madness called Green Wildebeest.
Henry Nightingale survives the Wind in the Portico. Oliver Pugh
meets his Loathly Opposite. Sir Edward Leithen encounters
the unusual in a nighted rainy park. In the all too short
"Skule Skerry", Anthony Hurrell encounters something dark and
massive on a stormy island. (I've never forgotten this one!)
The final two stories - "The Last Crusade" (epic satire re
manipulation of the masses by the press and demagogues) and
"The Last Crusade" (how a beautiful house can transcend its occupants)
- round out this superb blast from the past.

Quietly exciting. Recommended for a quiet night's entertainment.

Up to Buchan's usual standard, with the usual foibles!

A collection of short stories, as narrated by many of Buchan's major characters (Edward Leithen, Richard Hannay, Archie Roylance etc). On the upside, the brevity of the stories keeps them fresh, and Buchan has to work harder to focus his characterisation - usually something he spends a while doing. On the downside, some of the stories are of variable quality, although the majority are excellent. Also, Buchan's writing is nowadays often cited as being racist or anti-semitic, and this book would do nothing to ameliorate either accusation. However, I tend to view his writings as very much a product of his time - these are very much the writings of a British Imperialist who was writing in the twilight of empire, before WW2. As a result, I tend to feel that writing which could never be excused today should be viewed as a historical curiosity rather than anything else.

I enjoyed these short stories. I've read some of his other works, and I was not dissapointed. I'm sorry it took me so long to find him.

I have never read anything by Bernard Cornwell that I didn't enjoy immensely. While he is best known for series (The excellent Sharpe books, the even better Saxon Tales and the equally excellent Archer's Quest trilogy) so far at least Gallows Thief stands alone. I wouldn't be shocked if he eventually added to Captain Sandman's adventures.

One other thing which made this book stand out from his other work is the setting is not during a time of war. It takes place after Waterloo and answers the question "where do all the soldiers go after the wars?"

I recommend this book and all of Cornwell's work.

Another Great Sharpe-Like Character

As usual, Cornwell does a wonderful job. Must admit, I thought of Sharpe through the entire book. So many similarities. Didn't mind, however, since I read the entire Sharpe series and was sad when it ended.

Gallows Thief

As always Bernard Cornwell delivers the adventure and excitement. It is not medieval warfare but post Napolean England. The prologue captivated me as I was absorbed into the setting and the suspense and had to read the book. I am a long time fan of Cornwell and I am among the great many of who love his work. I love history but he makes learning it so much fun!
