Restless shape-shifter Kirra, having just fallen for a married man and been disowned by her otherwise loving family, needs a break at the start of bestseller Shinn's outstanding second novel in her Twelve Houses series (after 2004's Mystic and Rider). Kirra's younger sister, Casserah, provides her one. The newly titled Casserah is supposed to appear at the summer parties thrown by major lords of Gillengaria, but she could care less. Assuming Casserah's form, Kirra sets out on the social circuit in her stead to learn more about the nobles plotting to overthrow the king. Instead of taking the side of the ostensibly oppressed, Shinn dares to be a royalist, though not without sympathy to the underclasses. She brings back Kirra's companions from Mystic and Rider, adds several enjoyable new characters and paints their journey with a lyrical grace and deep appreciation of camaraderie reminiscent of Diane Duane at her best. Only the one-dimensional villain (always Shinn's weakest point) and the forehead-slapping stupidity of the infatuated lovers mar this superior fantasy series. (Mar.)

Fantasy and Romance-A fun Adult Read

The Thirteenth House (The Twelve Houses, Book 2)
Sharon Shinn got her character in real trouble this time. Kirra's picked the wrong man to fall in love with; he's already taken. Of course, this doesn't stop one of my favorite characters, Kirra, from making him her man.

All the other characters, Senneth, Justin, Cammeron, and Tayse, are all there giving advice, helping guard with the new problem of intrigue. They've all gotten invited to protect the princess from getting killed by the King's enemies as she makes her rounds of parties during the summer social circuit.

In the end, Kirra does the right thing. But I have to admit, her main character has to definitely learn from this experience. Some people get really offended by the story line, but there are some people in real life that get really burned by their choices. I think Shinn shows this happens, and Kirra learns a lot out of her experience.

I have to admit, I liked all the details, shape-changing, and love triangle that happened in this book. I plowed through it so I could see what was going to happen. If you enjoy fantasy and romance novels, this is for you. Couldn't put it down until I found out the ending. And I've already started on book 3. I recommend for Adult Fantasy readers that enjoy a lot of romance in their books.

This is one of my favorite series! I've read it at least a dozen times! Kirra is a wonderful character, very spirited. But she has a pretty tough go of it in her story.

I was so worried I would not like this sequel because of the bad reviews on amazon. I loved it. It was full of adventure, excitement, and romance.It still includes all the original group and introduces many new characters. It is mostly Kirra's story and you discover more about her character and come to love her. Yes, Kirra is naughty and makes some bad choices, but dont stop reading just because of that. She rights her wrongs and pays the price. The writer never pretends like her behavoir is acceptable and come on people its just a book, its not real. I definitely recommend this sequel if you enjoyed the first. I even think i liked this book more.

About the Author
Danny Kodicek is a graduate of Cambridge University. He works with Sunflower Learning in the UK, developing science simulations and tools for schools - his software has been translated into over fifteen languages and is sold worldwide. As a freelancer his previous clients include the BBC and the Royal Air Force, and he was co-creator of the award-winning TimeHunt Web site.

John P. Flynt, Ph.D., works in the software development industry, has taught at colleges and universities, and has authored courses and curricula for several college level game development programs. His academic background includes work in information technology, the social sciences, and the humanities. Among his previous books are "In the Mind of a Game," "Perl Power!," "UnrealScript Game Programming All in One," "Simulation and Event Modeling for Game Developers" (with co-author Ben Vinson), "Beginning Pre-Calculus for Game Developers," "Java Programming for the Absolute Beginner," "Beginning Math Concepts for Game Developers," and "Software Engineering for Game Developers." Among other engagements, he has been a speaker at game and educational conferences in San Antonio, LA, Atlanta, Austin, West Lafayette, and the 2004 Xtreme Game Developers Expo in Mountain View, CA. He has worked as a consultant on several curriculum development initiatives involving some of the largest proprietary colleges in the US and has taught literature, political science, computer science, and game development. Would Be Good If Not For Errors

This book would be good if it were not for the embarrassing number of typos and mistakes. I'm fortunate in that I already know a lot of the material that is being presented so I have been able to notice many of the errors, but I'm still concerned that there are many inaccuracies that I am not noticing on topics I'm unfamiliar with.

The fact that this is a second edition is even more puzzling. If this is a second edition, how much worse could the errors in the first edition have been? The official website does not have an errata or notes so there's not even a location where you can check to see what is wrong in the book.

The errors present are a real shame, because this book could've been quite good. The topics are covered in a sensible order at a good clip and could be quite useful to many a programmer. Unfortunately, with this book, you can never be sure if the material being presented is correct.

Nice Overview or Refresher. Interesting Read, But Not as Good as Lengyel or Dunn.

This book was quite an interesting read. Though a book of math and physics sounds like it would be boring, I found the text to be pretty engaging. At 688 pages, it’s not the longest technical resource, but the authors manage to pack a good deal in those pages. Of course, there is a lot of math in here, but that’s not all. Even some random topics like mazes and game theory pop up near the end. I really did enjoy the book and it seems worthwhile.

Some of the areas of focus include even basic number representations, arithmetic, algebra and trigonometry, vectors and calculus, to mass and acceleration, collision detection, force and motion, friction and more. Finally, in the last section, the authors cover some tangential topics like tile-based games, mazes, game theory and AI, even search techniques. Really, a good roster.

One of the main reasons I purchased this book, aside from general interest, was to gain some knowledge to apply to a custom physics engine. While that’s still (in my mind) a debatable goal, I do feel like Mathematics & Physics for Programmers has helped, at least with the general concepts.

Unfortunately, I did not try to implement any of the equations or pseudo code from the book, so I won’t comment on the accuracy of the code. It’s possible there were errors that I did not notice. I typically don’t base my implementations directly from books. I use the books to understand the big picture, to get a sense of what’s possible, and to understand the vocabulary and terms that I need to search for. Then I’ll find resources online when it comes to writing the code.

What I will say, though, is that the text is not as good as the other big 3d math books, specifically 3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development by Fletcher Dunn or Mathematics for 3D Game Programming and Computer Graphics by Eric Lengyel. For sure, if you are only buying one or two math books for game development, get either of those first. However, if you are like me and you’ve already read the popular books on the topic, this isn’t such a bad choice as a refresher or to round out your knowledge.

Krissy Moehl is an ultramarathon runner, coach, public speaker and race director. In her 15-year career, she has run more than 100 races. She has 55 female wins and 2 outright wins. Moehl's impressive track record boasts first female finishes at the world's toughest ultras including Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc 165km, Ultra Trail du Mont Fuji 100 mile, HURT 100, Hardrock 100 and several others. Finally an ultra guide that women and men can equally appreciate!

I am training for my first 50M after being a road runner for the past ten years. I have poured over so many other books in the past year but struggled to find one that is not so masculine-driven, dry or completely about finishing with elite pipe dream goals. This book arrived three days ago and has been carried everywhere with me, like a Harry Potter or my glorious mug of coffee.

The topics never drag on but are all very relevant and touching on awesome tips that I have not heard before in every other book. Krissy is extremely realistic about her suggestions and training plans, knowing that we are not all professional athletes and have jobs, family and other hobbies that fill our days. I love reading a section that brings up excellent points about being a female athlete, especially one that trains with both women and men. (Because that does change the dynamic.) And Krissy is right on, even this chapter would be beneficial for a man to read up on too. Especially one training, racing or in a relationship with a female athlete.

Lots of awesome workout suggestions and documents. The back section of the book really helped me wrap my brain around all of the layers of preparing for an ultra! There are so many elements I did not consider or felt too overwhelmed to begin testing out or planning. (A race budget chart was brilliant and quite eye opening!)

So glad Krissy Moehl decided to write this fab book and become my imaginary ultra coach. Thank you Krissy!!

DO NOT GET THE KINDLE VERSION

DO NOT GET THE KINDLE VERSION OF THIS BOOK!!! First of all the material and writing style are really enjoyable in the intro section. I was really excited to dig into the meat of the book with the training plans. When you get the to actual training plans they are unreadable in kindle format!! The tables get formatted oddly and become very hard to follow along. I'm mad that a kindle version is even an option. I'm torn on what to do now. I really don't want to have buy the book for a second time (in paperback) just to get a readable version. However, I do think there is a lot of good material here which is why I'm extremely frustrated. Rating for the content I read: 4.5 stars. Rating for the kindle version: 0 stars.

Like a coach between the bookcovers

I may not be a person for whom this book is primarily intended. You see, I am a veteran runner with loads of experience as a trail runner (finisher of 16 different 100 milers including Hardrock, Coldfoot, the Grand Slam, etc.), former race director, and current frequent volunteer at trail ultras. However, due to an accumulation of miles on my body and lack of goals, I "retired" from training. Now, injury-free but lacking fitness, I am once again motivated to train for new goals for non-competitive trail runs.
Along comes this book just in time! I was immediately struck by the logical organization, beginning with assessment of your running background and preferences, then directing the reader to training schedules appropriate for one's goals. Following a excellent chapters on tricks of the trade, training your brain, injury management and prevention, pacers and crew, gear, motivation, race day preparation, the race itself, recovering, and "what's next", which is a very thoughtful section about race analysis, further goal setting,and balance in one's life. Adding a lot of interest is the author's anecdotes about her very extensive experience (literally spanning the world) in running, racing, and representing her sport. The superb color images of runners running in beautiful locations motivate me to want to get back out there!

For any runner, perhaps particularly for a 5 or 10 km road runner or marathoner who wants to explore trail running at distances of 50 km and longer, but also for experienced trail ultra runners (including those needing new direction), this book is the closest you can come to having a personal coach.
