PanterA is the best metal band from this side of Texas. This band knows how to bring pure metal music back to life. Dimebag, Vinnie, Rex and Phil are 101% pure speed and energy. Pantera is not to be compaired to any other band out their. I wish that their were alot more bands that played music because they loved what they do and not for the money and plubicity.

The seventh in a collection by Lubar, the setting is contemporary in all stories. Plot development is fast paced and most chapters average just two pages, with macabre twists and unforeseen consequences. In many stories the protagonist actually fades out into darkness and one can assume death is their ultimate fate—these entries are not for the faint of heart. In one of the more ghastly tales, "Mr. Chompywhomp," a little girl needs to make a sudden unescorted trip to her Aunt's house, who lives around the block. She runs into three nasty older boys who seem to be out to harm her. Luckily she has her teddy bear, Mr. Chompywomp. When the boys tease her and rip the bear's head off its body, a strange demonlike creature emerges from the bear and starts eating the boys' hearts, one by one. The demon grooms himself, jumps back inside the teddy bear, and the little girl tells the grisly double creature not to worry, Auntie will have a sewing kit to fix it up, "good as new." Each story contains a twist, and though many are humorous, others earn their “creepy” moniker. Not every protagonist in these stories will live to see another day. Following the stories, Lubar gives short explanations of each tale’s inspiration. Stories include parents who fake a zombie apocalypse to avoid hosting a birthday party, a vicious doll in a dumpster, and giant squid creatures who wipe out a school because the students are too busy on their smartphones to escape. Only the protagonist, whose parents have steadfastly refused to buy her a phone, survives. The language is evocative but not overly challenging. For instance, in a story about animated cat litter, the girl sees “assorted lumps lurking beneath the surface of the litter.” With its mix of humor and chills, this collection is a sure bet for fans of R. As Promised: Wonderfully Warped and Creatively Creepy

I'm a fan of David Lubar's story collections. His novels, "Hidden Talents" and "True Talents", are successful, substantial, and accomplished, but for bite sized "horror" treats I like the idea of an anthology of very short creepy episodes. These stories are like little scary mental potato chips; able to give the reader a scary or weird "zing", but not detailed, lengthy or real enough to get inside a kid's head. I also like them because I think they are more creative, cover a wider range, and are better written than the general run of such tales.

For what it's worth, and as you might expect, not every story is a winner. But, even in the stories that aren't all that wonderful, the author does a good job of setting the tale at kid-reader level, and makes an honest effort to add something a little new to whatever idea he's working with.

It's also nice to have a few books, (this is the seventh collection), that are just beyond early chapter books, but not too demanding, and that have an edgy payoff. Lots of books aimed at the 8 to 12 year crowd are bland or predictable or just watered down versions of their older siblings. These stories seem to be made for and aimed right at the funny/horror/gross sweet spot for 8 to 12's, and I don't think that fact is lost on those readers.

So, they're fun, they're creepy; they're age appropriate. A nice find and worth a try for a young reader with a budding taste for horror or creepy weirdness.

(By the way, if you type "Lubar" into an Amazon book search the site will ask you if you mean "lunar" or possibly "lumbar". Right there I think that goes a long way toward explaining why David Lubar is so twisted.)

Wipeout of the Wireless Weenies, by David Lubar definitely rang true on being full of creepy. I obtained this book from the publisher before the release date, free for review, in hopes that my 8 year old would like it too. He isn't up for this type of spook yet, but I know many young boys who are. I loved the creativity in each of the different stories. This was my first David Ludbar creepy reading experience and I had already purchased a different title for my son without realizing it, but will hold off on having him read it a little longer, just because my son isn't as fond of the supernatural gory stories I liked as a child.

If your child likes age appropriate (8-13) gore, gross, creepy, Zombies, and other boogies this would be an excellent read. It reminded me a little of the Goosebumps books, but the stories are short stories and not related. This reading experience has definitely peeked my interest even if my son isn't yet ready we will be keeping an eye on this author's various series.

Warning: This book will not make you happy.

I don't generally like books with happiness in the title. They tend to be trying to tell me how I can be happy, or otherwise they're so vague and new-age that I wonder whether the author is for real. This book was very different.

This book is practical, very well written, and genuine in its approach. It doesn't make grandiose claims. A Guide to Valued Living

According to the Declaration of Independence, the "pursuit of happiness" is one of our "inalienable rights." As Russ Harris masterfully points out in this book, however, the pursuit of values over the long haul, rather than happiness, is more likely to lead to a full and meaningful life. The overall approach within the book is based upon acceptance and commitment therapy or ACT, which has increasingly been shown to be helpful in alleviating a wide range of human suffering. Rather than being a stodgy, stuffy presentation of ACT (and believe me, having written some of those myself - I know one when I see one!), the book reads more like a series of short stories which Dr. Harris presents in a conversational and engaging style to ilustrate how all of us can adopt a more kind and compassionate approach to our struggles with self-doubts, unwanted emotions, and worrisome thoughts. Indeed, the book could have just as easily been entitled "ACT for Dummies" not because it oversimplifies the approach, but because it makes it so accessible, understandable, and easy to apply. If you've heard about ACT and would like to know more about it, or have never heard of it, but want to check out what all the fuss is about, this is the place to start. I highly recommend the book to not only those of us who have fallen into the "happiness trap," but also to our friends, loved ones, and mental health professionals who have tried to liberate us from it. It can be usefully read and applied by itself or as an introduction to ACT before moving on to workbooks in the area such as "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life." Don't wait for the movie!

One of the best self-help book for everyone

I recommend this book to all my clients and colleagues. In a very accessible and captivating way, Dr Russ Harris made us understand how our mind can sometimes be an enemy to living a rich, vital and meaningful life. The book is full of EFFECTIVE, evidence-based strategies to effectively respond to our distressing emotions, thus reducing their impact on us. It also gives us strategies to disentangle ourselves from self-defeating thoughts. As we are able to free ourselves from the impact of unhelpful thoughts and feelings, we stop figthing them, and can invest our energy in living our life. As I read the book, I realize that life is not about having happy, pleasant thoughts and feelings. It is about living a meaningful life consistent with our values. The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy gives us the needed tools to just do that: FREE ourselves from our MIND and have the energy to live a meaningful life.
The Happiness Trappy is the most accessible, easiest to understand book on ACT therapy. It is the first book I recommend you to read on ACT. And if you become passionate about ACT like me, you can continue with many other fantastic and helpful books on ACT by other authors.

Very narrow scope, but I've learned a few things about attaching displays to my projects.

This book has some good information. It is by no means a comprehensive guide to all the types of LCD units usable with the Arduino. It is a good place to start learning. Don't expect to find anything about serial communication, but you will learn how to send output directly from the Arduino's pins. Because of some of this book's limitations, you might be tempted to rate it 3 stars, but I gave it 4 because although the book is short (much of it consists of code examples), it is inexpensive and has some cool projects like simulating an analog meter and even some stuff about making a very basic Arduino based oscilloscope. I would also suggest visiting the author's web site for more up to date modifications to the scope. You'll still want this book to show you how to hook up the LCD screen to the oscilloscope. Bottom line: if you're just starting out, add this book to your collection.

Could use more comments on the code. No page numbers or index. Relies on delay() for timing.

No page numbers, no index. Short book, but it gets right to the point. I'd like it if the code were commented a bit better, but I have that complaint about just about every Arduino book I've ever seen.

It does have some cool projects in it, and covers a wide variety of displays from alphanumeric, small monochrome, to reasonably sized color graphical displays.

Unfortunately, it makes liberal use of the delay() command to time things. This makes it very difficult to use his code in another project, as delay() is a blocking command.

I found this book very difficult to work my way through as nothing is titled. The contents does not have page numbers and it is not easy to find something in the book from the contents. A little more work on the formatting of this book would go a long way to it easy use.

Basic Conceptions of Physical Reality

The other reviewers have been a little excited and mistated the propositions that this book outlines.

1. Einstein never proposed a "hidden variables" theory, he was against this formulation. It was David Bohm who proposed hidden variables.

2. Einstein's ironic statement was "Does the moon disappear when I'm not looking at it?" This was stated in order to show the absurdity of the Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, which states that there are no particles in the universe until scientists perform experiments; i.e. the experiments themselves 'create' reality ahead of them, creating an illusion that scientists are exploring a reality that is independent of their mental existance.

"Einstein's Moon" is an excellent summary of that small, but important, battle that occured between the realists, lead by Einstein, and the quantum nihilists, lead by Niels Bohr.

The surprising state of affairs today, summed up under the ruberic of "Bell's Inequality" has yet more surprises waiting just around the corner. This is an area of physics and philosophy that can and will produce world-changing results in the very near future.

So, "Einstein's Moon" is excellent reading for anyone who wants to be prepared for the next revolution in man's understanding of the universe!

A very important book, though not a great read.

I found the explanations of the standard modern physics subjects to be mediocre except the part about Bell's Theorem. The significance lies not in the treatment of the subject (Bell's Theorem) but in the fact that Peat has tackled the subject at all. This theorem may prove to be the most important discovery in human history. Experimental proof (I've heard tell that it has been proven.) of local indeterminacy is mind-boggling. Why every science writer worth his salt isn't jumping to come up with a better write up is beyond me. This book is a must read--even for real students of quantum mechanics.

Great Arrangements, and excellent editing (i.e. chord symbols)

Look folks, just to be clear I am an advanced pianist/teacher, an excellent sight-reader, an above-average improviser and I know my chord symbols. I even perform small gigs in and around South Texas, often using this book as a baseline for setting the mood in the room. I'm not a Hal Leonard shill, so spare me any accusations. The other reviewer talks about all the numerous errors in chord symbols throughout the book with exception of 5 songs (which ones, I don't know, he doesn't say). I purchased this book in 2011 despite his review on a hunch that it would be at least half as good as the others in this series (I own all of the others) and I was not disappointed. The arrangements are fantastic, the editing excellent, and Hal Leonard has done much justice to this legend with this edition. The other reviewer must have received a poorly printed copy because there are no errors in mine. If he has specific errors on specific songs then he has not mentioned them; the one example he has said about a Bb chord labeled as B maj is nowhere to be found in the book. If he can read chord symbols as well as he says he can, why not just use a fake book instead of a book of piano solo arrangements? Folks, don't allow one bad review to dissuade you from enjoying this book. It's quality.

One of the best in this series

I have six other books in this terrific series (Late Night Jazz, Swinging Jazz, Jazz Ballads, George Gershwin, Disney, and The Beatles). Arranger Brent Edstrom is at his best here—thanks in no small part to the timeless sophistication of Ellington's compositions.

Each time I get a new book from these series, I play through it and dog-ear those pieces that I'll want to come back to again and again. Typically fewer than half the songs in the book are "hits" to my mind. But in this set of Ellington arrangements, all except for four got dog-eared. The rhythms, chord changes, and fills are really interesting (and suitably challenging) throughout—definitely suitable for professional performance either solo or as lead instrument in an ensemble.

Numerous printing errors in the chord changes

The vast majority of the pieces in this book have extensive and serious errors in the chord changes. Most jazz players refer to the chord changes, so be forewarned. Flat signs are missing everywhere in the chord changes - in the chord root and alterations. There are no errors in the music notes on the staff, which is how you can verify which changes are wrong. Only 5 pieces in this book are accurate. I brought this problem to the attention of Hal Leonard, after having spent over an hour detailing examples of the pieces, measures, errors. Shockingly, they told me that I didn't understand the use of "accidentals" and that I needed to study music theory. I fell off my chair laughing!
Here's the reply from Hal Leonard Customer Service: We think that you are missing a key point of music notation: any accidentals that appear in the key signature are not re-printed throughout the music. We would suggest that you begin studying music theory. Hal Leonard publishes titles designed to help you in this endeavor. ...
So if you buy this book, enjoy the printed music, but plan to correct the changes in all except 5 of the pieces in this book if you want to play the changes.

Great book, but semiconductor devices need update...

An excellent book on the optics side, with good theoretical derivations on many topics. However, I wish that the sections on semiconductor devices were more extensively updated in one of these new editions, especially since Yariv's group at CalTech were pioneers in the field of semiconductor lasers, and it would be well worth knowing what insights he can give on modern devices. For example, there is no discussion of strained quantum wells that I could find. The book has an excellent discussion of Bragg mirrors, and some discussion of their use in DFB lasers and VCSELs, but nothing about resonant cavity LEDs or resonant cavity photodiodes (or even just plain vanilla LEDs). The description of APDs is one of the few covered areas that is not rigorous. Of course, the book is a reasonable size, and so cannot contain everything, but I get the feeling that the semiconductor device areas were hardly touched from earlier editions. However, most of what Yariv and Yeh do cover, they do so in a detailed manner, so this is still a good book to have around. Chapters:

This text struggles to relate the mathematics to the theory. A nice supplement to a solid theory source, but lacking as a stand alone teaching tool is how I would describe this book.

A pretty good grad photonics book

This text is good for a moderately advanced exposure of photonics at the graduate level. It covers a lot of different topics and gives you everything you need to derive equations yourself. The problems I have with this text are as follows:

1) Quite a few typographical errors - if you are deriving everything yourself you will find most of these and it isn't much trouble

2) There are some blatant errors which are reused again in examples and derivations - one I remember off hand was the coupling coefficient in sinusoidal gratings but I haven't looked at this in a long time

3) Things are explained okay but not as clear as many other photonics texts in my opinion

4) The index is okay at best

I believe this book is a fairly standard graduate textbook for a first exposure on photonics which it serves pretty well if you are careful when reading it. I would not recommend this as a reference book. A better reference book at the same level or a bit more advanced would be "Physics of Photonic Devices" by Chuang.
