There are wonderful pictures in this book. It is a very detail oriented book with big scientific words, which makes it a difficult read; however, you will probably find anything you wish to know about oral pathology in this book.

While good in intentions and accurate in information presented, the book lacks clear and concise order and becomes very confusing for the begining pathology student. It also focuses too much on obscure conditions while ignoring more common ones. Very disappointing.

I love this guide! If practiced properly, it can save not only our lives, but also the lives of people who are in danger.

I heard so much of Jiu-Jitsu, but never know the origins and philosophy behind it.All I know is that Jiu-Jitsu is mostly use for defensive purposes. Only in reading this book did I know that the underlying philosophy of Jiu-Jitsu is using our opponent's strength against them. I really thought we need to be more powerful to defeat our opponent. As I was reading the Jiu-Jitsu techniques, I also tried to search and watch it in youtube to see the proper way of doing those techniques. These techniques are very dangerous if use by people with wrong mentality. It's not good for people who easily flares up and definitely not for show off person. We need to be humble. The more we grow our skills and knowledge for this kind of martial art, we need to be more humble.

I love how this book also includes the best exercises for this martial art. I love this guide! If practiced properly, it can save not only our lives, but also the lives of people who are in danger.

There is hope for even me to do Jiu Jitsu!

As a die-hard MMA, UFC fan, I must admit that I am in LOVE with all things martial arts and fighting. I took a wrestling class back in high school many, many moons ago and was never really good at it, but as I'm a bit older now I was looking to break into a new hobby that would give me a bit of physical activity but also be a lot of fun... so... I was considering seeing what it would be like to do Jiu Jitsu! This book helped me to realize that it's not as hard as one might be inclined to believe, and even an old(er) fogey like me has a shot at at least getting some basic moves down. I won't be entering the octagon or anything like that, but at least I can get out there, have some fun, and learn to whoop some tail if need be!

New, different and way too cute!

I crochet amigurumi critters constantly and am always on the outlook for something different. These fit the bill. With so many to choose from it was hard to know where to start....but in less than a week I have already made four covers. I need more bathrooms! The book is well laid out and the patterns clearly written. A little adjusting on size was needed, but that is to be expected as we all use different yarns, hooks etc. Mine has all turned out well. The monkey is way too adorable. This books is a great value for the money.

I absolutely adore this book. I have been crocheting for a few years and still find simple stitches fun. If you are new to crochet this is the perfect book for you! Even if you are experienced, Lisa Wright gives a new use and look to simple stitches. Definitely my new favorite crochet book!

Great, easy patterns! I made the birthday cake 'holder' for one of my granddaughters... inside the roll, I put money! Everyone loved it!!!! I don't think the patterns only have be a toilet paper cover lol... it's a great gift card or present holder thAt can be stuffed and used for cute gifts...like the cupcake or octopus, for example...this is a very useful book and, BTW, can also hide a roll of toilet paper :)

A GREAT read from start to finish!

I read this book along with my fifth-grade daughter's book club, and ended up finishing it before she did! This is an excellent story that can be appreciated by children as well as adults. While the story line did not interest me initially--an enchanted harmonica comes into the possession of several children over the course of several decades and then unites them in the conclusion--I could not put this book down. The book deals with difficult times and circumstances in our world's history (early-Hitler Germany, race and class relations in the United States) with directness that is heart-wrenching at times as we experience them through the book's multiple characters, all of whom were beloved to me by the time the book ended. I highly recommend this one!

A new favorite

I am a third grade teacher and often look at children's literature for potential read alouds or recommendations. I saw this title in the Washington Kids's Post and decided to try it for a quick weekend read. I can't begin to explain how much I loved this book. The story of each character is so intriguing and then so expertly pulled together at the end. It would be a challenging read for my students, but I absolutely recommend this for young teens and beyond. It has a powerful message that will warm any heart. An excellent choice!

Fantastic book that was hard to put down. My daughters (ages 8 and 10) and I read it together and truly enjoyed this book. It gently introduces some important events history - prejudices, hardships and segregation. It was just the right amount of information for the intended age group. The author weaves several different characters and time periods together into a beautiful and triumphant story.

This book is about programming in Spark--a language highly suited for writing programs that need to be reliable, and thus particularly relevant to those application areas where safety or security are important. It is a major revision of the previous book which was entitled High Integrity Ada .

Spark is sometimes regarded as being just a subset of Ada with various annotations that you have to write as Ada comments. This is mechanically correct but is not at all the proper view to take. Spark should be seen as a distinct language in its own right and that is one reason why the title was changed in this edition.

Spark has just those features required for writing reliable software: not so austere as to be a pain, but not so rich as to make program analysis out of the question. But it is sensible to share compiler technology with some other standard language and it so happens that Ada provides a better framework than many other languages. In fact, Ada seems to be the only language that has good lexical support for the concept of programming by contract by separating the ability to describe a software interface (the contract) from its implementation (the code) and enabling these to be analysed and compiled separately. The Eiffel language has created a strong interest in the concept of programming by contract which Spark has embodied since its inception in the late 1980s.

There has recently also been interest in reliable software in areas other than those that have traditionally cared about reliability (avionics and railroads). It is now beginning to be realized that reliable software matters in other areas, such as finance, communications, medicine and motor cars.

Accordingly, I have changed the presentation with the goal that no knowledge of Ada is required to understand the discussion. However, there are some remarks comparing Spark and Ada which will be helpful to those who do know Ada. Most of these are confined to the ends of sections and are in a different font but just a few are embedded in the text in square brackets. I have always been interested in techniques for writing reliable software, if only (presumably like most programmers) because I would like my programs to work without spending ages debugging the wretched things.

Perhaps my first realization that the tools used really mattered came with my experience of using Algol 60 when I was a programmer in the chemical industry. It was a delight to use a compiler that stopped me violating the bounds of arrays; it seemed such an advance over Fortran and other even more primitive languages which allowed programs to violate themselves in an arbitrary manner.

On the other hand I have always been slightly doubtful of the practicality of the formal theorists who like to define everything in some turgid specification language before contemplating the process known as programming. It has always seemed to me that formal specifications were pretty obscure to all but a few and might perhaps even make a program less reliable in a global sense by increasing the problem of communication between client and programmer.

Nevertheless, I have often felt that underlying mathematical foundations can provide us with better tools even if the mathematical nature is somewhat hidden by a more practical facade. For example, enumeration types are really about sets but a deep understanding of set theory is not necessary in order to obtain the benefits of strong typing by realizing that a set of apples is not the same as a set of oranges.

Spark has this flavour of practical helpfulness underpinned by solid mathematical foundations. You don't have to understand the theorems of Boehm and Jacopini in order to obtain the benefits of good flow structure. Equally, Spark does not require esoteric annotations of a formal kind but quite simple affirmations of access and visibility which enable the Spark Examiner to effectively 'look over your shoulder' and identify inconsistencies between what you said you were going to do in the annotations and what you actually did in the code.

One of the advantages of Spark is that it may be used at various levels. At the simplest level of data flow analysis, the annotations ensure that problems of mistaken identity do not arise, that undefined values are not used and other similar flow errors are trapped. The next level of information flow analysis gives additional assurance regarding the inter-dependence between variables and can highlight unexpected relationships indicative of poorly organized data.For certain applications, formal proof may be useful and Spark provides a third level in which formal preconditions, postconditions and other assertions enable proofs to be established with the aid of the Spark tools.

However, formal proof is easily oversold; the effort involved in developing a proof can be high and in many cases might well be spent more effectively on other aspects of ensuring that a program is fit for its purpose. So the ability to apply Spark at various levels according to the application is extremely valuable.

A simple use of proof is in showing that a program is free from exceptions due to run-time errors such as those caused by overflow or writing outside an array. This can be done in a straightforward manner and does not require the addition of the more detailed annotations required for proof in general.

The various levels of analysis might even be mixed in a single program. The fine detail of key algorithms might be formally proved, higher organizational parts might benefit from information flow analysis, whereas the overall driving routines could well need only data flow analysis. And proof of freedom from run-time errors might be applied to the whole program.

I must say a little about the background to this book. I first encountered the foundation work done by Bob Phillips at Malvern when a consultant to the British Government and tasked with monitoring the usefulness of various research activities. I remember feeling that the flow analysis he was investigating was potentially good stuff but needed practical user interfaces.

That was twenty-five years ago. The current language and tools reflect the enormous energy put into the topic since then by Bernard Carre and his colleagues, first at Southampton University, then at Program Validation Limited and later at Praxis Critical Systems. The original approach was for the analysis of existing programs but now the emphasis is much more on writing the programs correctly in the first place.

However, it always seemed to me that although the tools and techniques were gaining steady acceptance, nevertheless both the tools and indeed the world of programmers deserved a more accessible description than that found in conference papers and user manuals.

A big impetus to actually do something was when my daughter Janet and I were invited by Program Validation Limited to join in a review of the formal definition of Spark and its further development. This resulted in a report familiarly known as Janet and John go a-Sparking (non-British readers should note that there is a series of children's books concerning the activities of Janet and John). Being involved in the review strengthened my feeling that a book would be very appropriate and, thanks to the support of Praxis, led to the first version of this book in 1997.

Since then, Spark and its tools have evolved further to include the safe parts of object oriented programming, a better means of interfacing to other parts of a system, a simpler means of showing that a program is free from exceptions, and more auditable means of proving that a program is correct. The various tools are also greatly improved both in terms of speed and quality of reporting.

These improvements justified this new book and I am most grateful for the support of Praxis in enabling me to write it. The CD at the back includes the latest demonstration versions of the major tools and electronic copies of a great deal of further documentation as well as the exercises and answers. Excellent Book for Professionals

If you are in the business of creating serious software that is safety critical or security related then this book is essential reading, it is also an excellent guide if you have an interest in how such software is created. Focusing on how the SPARK language assures correctness throughout the construction of the software and how the supporting tools allow analysis of the resulting program, the book forms an essential reference work for users of the SPARK approach to developing software.
This book consists of three main parts plus an appendix.
The first part consists of an overview of why SPARK was created and the background to the language and tools.
Part two looks in detail at the SPARK language.
Part three considers the tools available; various code analysis techniques and design issues that can help in the development of high integrity software. Three small case studies are included, together with some examples of real projects where SPARK has been used in large scale industrial projects.
The Appendix covers the syntax of SPARK, how to use the CD-ROM and some notes on the continuing developments of the evolution of SPARK.
The included CD-ROM allows you to try out some of what the book teaches and includes limited versions of the SPARK Examiner toolset.
In this book John Barnes writes in a style similar to his other texts; this is rather like a guiding teacher leaning over your shoulder as you work at the computer, pointing out things to observe and illustrating with snippets of code or background information. It is a style that has been criticised by some, but I find it rather reassuring as you are guided along the path to understanding. The inclusion of a CD-ROM also allows you to understand by doing, and although the tool is limited in capability, it is possible to get a good flavour of the capabilities of its parent product.
This book replaces the previous SPARK book: "High Integrity Ada : The SPARK Approach". Barnes covers the revisions and enhancements of the SPARK language described in his original book, if you are an existing user of SPARK, you need this issue to stay up-to-date with the important revisions of the language and tools. This book tries to distance itself somewhat from Ada95, possibly because of the image that language has with less well-informed programmers, but since you need an Ada compiler to produce executables from SPARK programs it would be fair to point out that SPARK is firmly rooted in Ada95.
Creating high integrity software is a disciplined process, and the book is very much based in the practical application of SPARK in building high integrity software. The SPARK language is based solid mathematical foundations, but there is no detailed descriptions at this level, the book rightly points out that they are there and then moves on towards giving you the practical information you need to write SPARK programs. Mastering SPARK gives you unprecedented skills in the highly desirable field of producing high integrity software.

Solid edition of an important work

Obviously, a Kindle edition of an old work is not going to be a critical edition with any sort of scholarly apparatus. As long as it is properly divided into chapters, complete, it should suffice as a readerly edition. And this edition does all that.

Samuel Johnson's prose deserved to be enjoyed in the bite-sized portions of each essay. A worthwhile read, even if you just want to skip around.

I love Samuel Johnson.

He is, by far, one the better 18th century writers I have read. While there are many writers of merit, it is Johnson who uses all the flourishes and verbosity present in so many18th century literary efforts with a virtuosity that makes his writing incredibly approachable and readable. Give him a try.

"This small book is a concise yet successful introduction into the history and worldview of religious Zionism. Schwartz begins his story in 1902, with the founding of the Mizrahi movement and its revolutionary "activism of pioneering and political variety foreign to the existing Torah world." The majority of the work is dedicated to the movement before 1948 and Israel's early years. When Schwartz does discuss more recent phenomenon, he tries to highlight how these represent shifts from classic religious Zionist belief. The chapters are short and accessible, and will serve lay readers well to get a valuable introduction into early religious Zionism. Those looking for more thorough or detailed studies, however, would be better served by more classic academic works by Schwartz and others.
