An outstanding textbook

Ronald Glossop's "Confronting War: An Examination of Humanity's Most Pressing Problem," is an outstanding textbook. The author divides the text into four parts; Introduction to the War Problem; Causes of War; The Contemporary Situation; and Proposals for Solving the War Problem. Part one is a conceptual and historical framework of war; part two probes the cause of war and examines mainstream views and values of war; part three is a strong inspection of the military and institutional behavior of war; and part four is an analysis of reforms.
Professor Glossop correctly opens the narrative in part one with a succinct but powerful message, "War is about power and the use of physical violence to determine which party in a conflict will prevail." From this starting point onwards the author presents a sophisticated array of information certain to aid the war discovery process. Overall, this book is well researched and expertly written. Moreover, the notes and bibliography are superb. In conclusion, this textbook is a valuable asset for those who believe in the serious practice of conflict resolution.

REALLY UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM OF WAR AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO SOLVE IT

This book offers a thorough investigation of the problem of war including a wonderful analysis of the causes of war and the present international situation. The chapter on competing ideologies is very enlightening. The final section on what needs to be done to deal with the problem of war is insightful and argues persuasively that the war problem is not going to be solved until the U.N. is transformed into a democratic world federation.

an excellent book which would appeal to academics, students and practitioners that work with the customer-level data

Bart Baesens’ “Analytics in a Big Data World” is a particularly timely and topical book that provides an easy and well-structured guide to data analysis. Its importance is highlighted in the opening chapter where the need is identified for more experts with analytical skills. This book meets this niche in the market by providing an introductory text for those wishing to educate themselves in the fundamentals of data analysis. It is equally well suited as a supplementary text for business courses that incorporate quantitative methods, and I will be recommending this book to my University library.
The book provides a holistic view of data collection and processing with a very strong practical focus. This discussion of real-life practicalities, such as handling of missing values or target definition, which are seldom touched upon in standard statistical/ machine learning texts, adds a special value.
The book focuses on a customer/individual as data generator, and considers her in a diversity of roles: as a consumer, borrower and part of the community. This highlights the current necessity to analyse the customer in her entirety bringing together huge amounts of disjoint data. I especially liked the chapter on social network analysis, as one of the most recent areas of individual’s digital activity that has not been addressed coherently before. The examples of practical applications towards the end of the book illustrate again various aspects of human activities and associated business problems.
The chapter on methods is concise and yet comprehensive, and the same applies to the entire book. The level of math is appropriate for a reader with some basic statistical knowledge. One thing that I would like to see from a teaching point of view is the list of further recommended reading, e.g. should the reader wish to learn more about linear or logistic regression, what books would be helpful from the author’s point of view. This is, however, a very minor point, and the list of references after each chapter is impressive, it would be good just perhaps, to single out some more ‘educational’ ones.
In summary, it is an excellent book which would appeal to academics, students and practitioners that work with the customer-level data.

Short review, pretty useless.

This is a pretty thin book, which reviews various statistical methods. The Big Data World in the Title is for marketing only, the book does not touch Big data at all. As for statistical methods, they are described briefly, and you will not learn them from this book, maybe except a few simplest. In general, the book was pretty useless for me, only maybe to remind that there are some statistical methods which I need to recall, using other better books.

A very good book for managers, professionals and students that wish to understand or broaden their knowledge in analytics

This books presents a clear, concise, and straight-forward introduction to most relevant topics concerning analytics. It is an introductory book in the sense that it discusses all topics without going in depth regarding the underlying mathematical models, but it is done so without neglecting presenting the reader with the most important equations and formulas that are needed for effective decision-making. It covers a wide range of problems and use-cases, from credit scoring to fraud detection and social networks analytics, which are supported by the author's experience in different projects.

Readers that can obtain very good insights from reading this book fall into four categories, in my opinion: managers that wish to understand the added value that analytics could bring to their companies; mid-level executives and analysts that are either starting to use analytics or that are working in analytics projects with consultancy firms and wish to understand the results that the projects will bring to them; established analytics professionals that are looking for new ideas when applying analytics at their firms; and students both at an undergrad and MBA level that are following introductory courses on either Business Intelligence or Business Analytics. For all of them, this book will allow them to quickly get a grasp of most important analytics concepts, and also will present them with many applications where analytics can be used.

Concurrently, he has developed numerous training programs in project management and supervision for the construction industry. Most recently, he codeveloped the NECA Electrical Project Supervision training program with Robert Segner, with whom he has conducted "train the trainer" sessions for the past decade.

Robert O. Segner Jr. is a professor of construction science in the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. He followed years of construction practice with four decades in construction higher education. He has served as president of the American Council for Construction Education. Segner codeveloped the NECA Electrical Project Supervision training program with Jerald Rounds and has conducted "train the trainer" sessions for the past decade. He has developed and taught numerous other continuing education programs.

About the Author

Mr. LIN JIANJUA was born in Indonesia 1953 and came back to China with his family in 1954. He began to learn Chinese martial arts in 1964. He entered the Physical Education Department of Fujian Normal University in 1973 and studied Chinese Martial Arts under the direction of Professor Guo Minhua. In 1979, Mr. Lin entered Wuhan Institute of physical Education to learn Form and Will Boxing (Shing-Yee-Ch'uan), Eight-diagram Palm (Bagua-Ch'uan), Taijiquan (T'ai-Chi-Ch'uan) and other excellent techniques from Professor Wen Jingming and Professor Liu Yuhua, the famous martial artists of China.

On graduation from Fujian Normal University in 1976, Mr. Lin began his career in universities as a martial arts teacher. He worked in the Physical Education Department of Fujian Normal University from 1978 to 1983, and he has worked in the Physical Education Department of Amoi University since 1983. During the past eighteen years, Mr. Lin has taught many students Chinese martial arts, some of whom came from Japan, America, England, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, New Zealand, Germany, Singapore and The Philippines. He has once been invited to Ateneo University of The Philippines to give a lectures of Chinese martial arts.

Mr. Lin Jianhua is now a council member of Fujian Martial Arts Association, the vice-president of Amoy Martial Arts Association, the president of Martial Arts Association and the Research Society of Taijiquan of Amoi University, and the chief coach of the martial arts team of Amoi University. As a national grade judge of martial arts, he has executed his duties in many national or international contests of martial arts.

Book could easily be improved

This is on Ok book. It lacks in two things: 1. Proper editing. I don't believe words are mistranslated- they are misspelled. This is the editors fault. 2. Better pictures- The pictures on the outside cover of the book are great- but the insided pictures leave a lot to be desired. They are grainy black and white photos that look like old newspaper photos. They allow you to get the general idea of a posture or stance but details of a particular technique are lost.

Well worth the money

I have been practicing Xingyiquan for over two years now and find this book a great help. The pictures are a bit overexposed, but you can figure them out. If you are looking for a book with pretty pictures to put on your coffee table, go somewhere else.
But if you want to learn Xingyiquan, there are not much better sources, than this book.
I have read some bad reviews on this particular book that almost made me not buy it, but I did anyway. And I am glad I did.
Someone said that their teacher told them that there isn't ONE CORRECT movement in the book.
To me, this sounds a bit arrogant. And it would be tough to make a book on Xingyiquan without ONE correct movement. I think that that person who wrote that review has an instructor who knows nothing about Xingyiquan.
If he did know about Xingyiquan, he would know that there are plenty of different styles to the art. And that they are ALL done in somewhat different ways.
My instructor is a Master in all the internal arts and said the book was very good. This coming from a man who wrote his own book on the subject.
The thing one has to understand about ANY marital arts, is that there are different branches. This doesn't happen to be from my branch, but it does not mean that I cannot learn from it.
The intent of the art is there, and that is the important thing.
Even forms from Teacher to Student, things can change to a certain degree.
But this book (Bad Photo's aside) is one of the best books on the subject. It is jammed with precise information and is well worth your time and money. I have over two hundred books on Martial Arts (Mostly Chinese MA) and find this one to be one of great value.

Solid Content, Poor Production Quality

It's a shame that this book couldn't have been cleaned up a bit. The translation is awkward, and the pictures are too light. Having said that, I must admit that I really like this book. Books on Hsing-i are not as hard to find as they used to be, but most today choose to cover the same old material. The five fists are included here, as well as the twelve animals, but the author goes on to further cover a couple of forms not available in other English language books. The photos are excellent in CONTENT, but as I said before, they're too light. Still one may overlook the shortcomings of the book and concentrate on the positives. This book would be best read after reading Robert W. Smith's book on the same topic (preferably the original version, if you can find it).

not a primer for day traders

The other reviews are right...this book is definitely not a how-to guide for personal investors looking to "beat the market." It's essentially an academic tome, so its theme is tightly circumscribed (so they do not and should ask about all asset markets that might possibly be relevant to investors -- only the stock market over certain periods). The exposition is extremely sophisticated and makes use of cutting edge mathematical and especially statistical modeling to make the case.
The punch line has two important parts: (i) the "random walk" hypothesis is false -- day to day movements in stock prices are not random bouncing that many extant models claim they should be; and (ii) most of us will never have the capabilities to employ these modeling techniques to put the rubber to the road and find out WHICH way stock X is going on December 13.
So it's fascinating in regard to the mechanics of asset pricing, but totally useless as a practical investment guide. But that doesn't mean it's a *bad* book or that it warrants a 3-star rating (the average at the time of this review). Blame _Business Week_ if you expected something else. The book is exceptional and does no more and no less than what it claims to do.

A non-random challenge to the random walk hypothesis

The random walk hypothesis, considered the bedrock of financial theory and modeling, is challenged in this collection of eleven papers by the authors. They attempt in these papers to show that the financial markets do contain a certain degree of predictability, and they illustrate this by both analyzing empirical data and with the development of various mathematical formalisms. It is always interesting when a given paradigm which is entrenched in the minds of a field's practicioners, is challenged and shown to be either inconsistent or not supporting the real facts. The authors make a strong case in this book against the inherent randomness of the financial markets, and they do so in a way that is very understandable. Also, after a consideration of their results, one can construct practical trading software packages that are based on financial models not using the random walk hypothesis. Thus their study is very useful from a practical, everyday trading point of view.
After a brief overview of the efficient markets hypothesis, in the next chapter the authors go right into the analysis of the efficient markets hypothesis by using a specification test based on variance estimators. They conclude from their results that the random walk model is not consistent with the behavior of weekly returns. Interestingly, they find large (negative) autocorrelations in security prices. They do not conclude though that all financial models based on the random walk hypothesis are invalid, but rather they use the specification test to study various stochastic price processes. Since volatilities do change over time, the authors are careful not to reject the random walk hypothesis because of heteroskedasticity; the test they do employ takes into account changing variances. They also discuss the possible role that non-trading practices may have on their conclusions. For the purely mathematical reader, they include in an Appendix to the chapter proofs of the theorems they used in the chapter.
In Chapter 3, the authors employ Monte Carlo simulations to study the variance ratio, Dickey-Fuller, and Box-Pierce tests under Gaussian null and heteroskedastic null hypotheses. They also consider the power of the variance ratio test against an AR(1) process, AR(1) + random walk, and an integrated AR(1) process models of asset price behavior. The discussion is very thorough, and they conclude that the variance ratio test is a viable tool to use for inference in financial modeling. Since they do inform the reader the particular packages they use to perform the Monte Carlo simulations, their results, which they report in tables in the chapter, can be straightforwardly checked.
A somewhat esoteric but very readable account of what has been called nonsynchronous trading is given in the next chapter. They begin the discussion by employing an interesting and elementary argument that explains very well the consequences of ignoring nonsynchronicity in the sampling of multiple time series. The authors list ten consequences of the presence of nonsynchronous trading and then study the empirical evidence for nontrading effects. Also, they give a brief summary of the implications of employing Markov chains to build dependence into the nontrading process, motivating readers to perform the necessary calculations on their own.
The next chapter focuses on contrarian investment strategies; namely one that takes advantage of negative serial dependence in asset returns. The authors summarize the data on autocorrelation properties and also present a formal model of a particular contrarian strategy. They conclude, interestingly, that a large portion of contrarian profits cannot be attributed to overreaction.
The most interesting chapter in the book is the next one on long-range dependence in stock market prices, for it is here that many alternative statistical techniques have been devised to study this dependence. The R/S statistic is modified and then used by the authors to test for long-range dependence in daily and monthly stock return indices. Surprisingly, they find that after correcting for short-range dependencies, there is no evidence of long-range dependence in this data.
The authors switch gears somewhat in Chapter 7, where they discuss deviations from the capital asset pricing model. They discuss effectively the two models which attempt to explain these differences, based on risk-based and nonrisk-based alternatives. These two models are proposed as alternatives to the multifactor asset pricing models that have been employed to explain deviations from CAPM.
In chapter 8, data-snooping biases are investigated using the theory of induced order statistics and tested with Monte Carlo simulations. The authors effectively convince the reader of the impact of data-snooping biases in asset pricing models, and how these biases arise from tendencies to focus on anomalous data.
Even more practical considerations are considered in Chapter 9, where the authors show how to maximize predictability in asset returns. They use a model of time-varying premiums to estimate what they call the maximally predictable portfolio, with this model using an out-of-sample rolling estimation technique to avoid data snooping problems. Monte Carlo simulations are again used to validate the results of the models. They emphasize in their conclusions that predictability does not imply market inefficiency.
Emphasizing the discreteness of real price data, the irregular timing of transaction prices, and the conditional nature of price changes, the authors develop in Chapter 10 a model that addresses these issues using what they call an ordered probit model. They conclude, using some interesting technical analysis with their model and its comparison with empirical data, that discreteness is important in financial modeling.
Chapter 11 is very empirical, wherein the authors study transaction data on the S&P 500 futures contracts with the goal of studying price behavior in relation to arbitrageur strategies. They conclude that on the average, mispricing increases with time to maturity and is path-dependent.
The last chapter of the book discusses the October 1987 stock market crash, with the goal of analyzing order imbalances and stock returns. They conclude that there are notable differences in the returns realized by stocks in the S&P index and those that are not, interestingly.

Excellent Econometric Analysis for the Right Audience

This is a book about financial economics, not day-trading. The techniques used is advanced econometric analysis, not technical charting. The purpose is to clarify some common myth about efficient market theory and the random walk hypothesis, not to show one how to pick stocks. Just like the authors' other book ("Econometrics of Financial Markets"), this one is of the highest high quality, and does a superb job on what it set out to be.
Some readers seem to be disappointed at this book by naively assuming what the title implies, as shown by some of the reviews here. They really can't blame anyone but themselves. Just because Burton Malkiel's classic didn't show us how to day trade doesn't mean a book with the opposite title will do so, nor did the authors ever claim that, either.
