As the intensity of this activity increased during the early Bronze Age, production became more coordinated, perhaps by an emergent elite who appear to have supported their position of authority by means of divination and the control of ritual knowledge. This study explores evidence of these changes in ceramics, the layout of space at the site, and animal remains. It synthesizes the data retrieved from years of excavation, showing not only the evolution of production methods, but also the emergence of social hierarchy in the Three Gorges region over two millennia.

Rowan K. Flad is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. He is actively engaged in archaeological field work in China and has lectured widely on Chinese archaeology. He co-edited a book on specialization in the series Archaeological Papers of the American Anthropological Association and has contributed articles to many edited volumes and journals including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Current Anthropology, the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology and the Journal of Field Archaeology.

I have read a number of Joseph Murphy's books. His approach to positive thinking is quite understandable and very reasonable. I also enjoy reading all his examples of people who succeed using his methods, so when I saw that Quiet Moments with God did not have examples but was mainly a series of affirmations (although very good ones), I put it aside to read later. Well, something very odd just happened. It is the sort of thing that usually is chalked up to coincidence. During my lunch hour I read a few pages of Quiet Moments with God. Then I returned to work. Someone had made a request that I was unable to fulfill; suddenly the answer to this person's problem popped into my head and, sure enough, that was what this person needed. Again, this may seem like a coincidence, but these things always do. That is why we ignore them. I am convinced, though, that Dr. Murphy is accurate in his approach. I am so convinced, in fact, that I tackled another problem for someone that was previously unsolvable and that, too, magically was solved. I would recommend Dr. Murphy's books to anyone who wants to get things done.

A true life-changer whose message is limitless

I can say about this book what I could not say about any other: it has been the source of my guidance in day to day life. It is beyond regular self help literature. Its message takes roots in one's inside so that changes in actions take place not due to one's will power but, instead, unconsciously. I would highly reccomend it to every and any body.

A helpful little book in times of need

This is a little book containing various (many) examples of affirmative prayer (about a page for each prayer) for use on specific occasions when help might be required.

In general I greatly appreciate Joseph Murphy's books, but didn't get so much out of this one, since it's not designed for reading from beginning to end, which is what I did.

Here is a sentence from one of the prayers:

"Divine Love flowing from me blesses all who come into my atmosphere."

Many will appreciate this litle book, others may not.

A refreshingly new view of the genetic codes

Nowadays everyone has heard of the genetic code (in the singular). There is a certain amount of confusion in many people's minds, encouraged by the journalistic use of the phrase "genetic code" to mean what a biologist would call the genome, i.e. the complete DNA sequence for an individual. Nonetheless, there are plenty of good sources, ranging from the highly technical to the popular, to clarify the matter for those who want to be set straight.

Marcello Barbieri is talking about something different, that is not only little known to the general public, but is also far less well known among biologists than it deserves to be. For him "codes" is plural, and he means more than just the familiar set of rules that say, for example, that when the triplet AAA occurs in an appropriate context in the DNA of a cell the aminoacid lysine needs to occur in the sequence of the corresponding protein. For Barbieri this is just one of numerous organic codes. Some of the others are also "genetic", in the sense that they involve reading more from DNA sequences than just aminoacid sequences, but others are not, as they involve information coded into structures such as sugars and histones that are not nucleic acids.

All this should have considerable interest for the biologist even if we just stop there, but Barbieri goes on to build a theory of evolutionary complexity on the existence of multiple codes. Each time a new code appears during evolution it allows a large jump in the complexity of the organisms that possess it, but it does not replace earlier codes, which continue to be used, and it does not cause the simpler organisms to disappear. Thus modern organisms constitute a sort of pyramid in which the simplest organisms, the bacteria, use the ordinary genetic code and nothing else. The simplest eukaryotes add to the complexity by using splicing codes as well -- still in the genetic material, but now allowing fragments to be combined in different ways, and thus interpreted in different ways. The most recent of his codes to appear in evolution is language, which distinguishes our own species from all the others.

A wrong path to explaining biology

This book has a germ of an idea, but overall the author's exposition is confused and unconvincing. The big idea is that life is a set of organic codes and that codes imply meaning, hence the "semantics" in the title. Barbieri attemps to show that codes are necessary mappings between domains that e.g. allow information stored in the genome to be translated into the organism through development. A key point is that the genome contains insufficient information to fully describe the organism. From this, the author posits codes for other processes, e.g. exon splicing and signal transduction, although he offers no evidence and just suggests biologists haven't looked for them. He also tries to use his ideas to "explain" evolution, especially the Cambrium explosion of phyla.
I found his ideas unconvincing. His ideas rest on his model of how complexity needs to be generated, based on algorithms to reconstruct CAT scan images. He uses a new term "convergent increase in complexity" to mean "reconstructing a structure from incomplete information", which is based on these CAT scan image algorithms. However, a wealth of literature on cellular automata (finite state machines) shows that complexity can be generated by simple rules. Furthermore, repeatable, complex structures can be observed by these processes. If one needs convincing about this, just look at the biomorph images in Dawkins' "The Blind Watchmaker" for taste of how simple rules can create complex, "body plans". L-systems are another example.
But despite his claims, Barbieri does not really offer falsifiable hypotheses and for this reason alone, it is difficult to understand how anyone can build on this work as a model of biology.
Rather than thinking of codes as means to map information spaces, other workers have followed more fruitful approaches, e.g. how codes are used in information theory as a model to understand the biology. What is apparent from computational science, e.g. Holland's work on tagging systems, and wet biology, is that life needs to have systems that co-ordinate. Co-ordination becomes increasingly difficult as organisms increase in complexity and size. Biology seems to indicate that many approaches to communication used in industry have their surrogates in living systems.
Barbieri comes over as a little petulant that his ideas have not be taken up by biologists. A quick search on the web showed that only people involved in a "discipline" called biosemiotics had looked at his work, and these texts reinforced the sense that incomprehensibity was used to mask lack of content. I hope I have given some reasons why this might be so.
In conclusion, although I found this book in a biology section, it might have been better placed with the humanities.

A typical anti-Darwinism pseudoscience book

The book contains 280 pages of text, 25 pages of refenreces, 7 pages of INDEX, and many figures and cartoon to explain the concept of author's hypothesis. Barbieri was a development biologist at MRC in Cambridge, NIH, and Max Planck.

This is a typical anti-Darwinism semi-pseudoscience book. I picked up the book because the book cover had a Chomsky's accolade. It's not as obvious and outrageous as Intelligent Desing-sort of book, but the author cites his own book to explain his main points. Many biological facts in the book are real and correct, but there is no scientific logical structure to support the author's "semantic" theory. I was struck by the fact that this book was published from Cambridge University Press.

A Fun Book For Today's Americans Who Were Alive In the 1940s.

These "decades" books of American Ads, this one being the 1940s, are lots of fun. The 1940s were my teenage years. And they included the period of America's participation in WW II. I remember many of those ads. Seeing them again brings back lots of memories, most of them pleasant.
And I suppose that this book would be great for younger people studying into the American psyche of that decade. The postwar period after 1945 was a time of high enthusiasm and optimism in America, i.e. up to the time of the Berlin Blockade by the Russians circa 1948. That episode put something of a damper on the American outlook.

I have kept this book handy and still enjoy looking into it randomly on evenings. Most of the ads are in color, some small and others large. I enjoy looking at all of them.

Glorious Ads--With a Heavy Dose of Smugness

I have owned this book for years and have had a divided opinion of it. It gets 3 stars for simply existing. Who else but Taschen would produce a fat book of (mostly) comment-free ads? It helps that it's part of a series, too. Like this one? Then go back to the 30's or up to the 50's.

Now the things I don't like. Often, four ads are shrunk down and displayed on a single page. You want to revel in the pictures, but there are no pictures to revel in (on these pages). Ads that get their own page are often noticeably cropped--but that's reality.

The worst is that Taschen's editors use the book as a platform to maker smug comments about consumerism, racism, short-sightedness, and capitalism.

In some instances, they even get the facts wrong. In vilifying a Goodyear ad about airships, Taschen mentions how the hydrogen-filled Hindenburg had blown up only 3 years prior. Yet the Goodyear ad clearly states that their airships would be filled with non-combustible helium.

Taschen did a wonderful thing by producing this series. Now if they could just get off of their bully pulpit and let the ads speak for themselves--for better or worse.

This book is all I thought it would be & more, as it is like going back in time, to see just what the mind-set of that Era was, & how it even filtered down into the popular culture. This book could be used in a clasroom, & even in marketing & business classes, to illustrate what the pre-"mad men" era of advertising was like, & how it helped create the kind of culture that we have, even today. Enjoy this book, as it is truly a gift of exceptional value, & entertainment--& even as a teaching implement!!!

A potbelly stove served as the only source of heat, and the school lacked running water, indoor plumbing, and a cafeteria. Yet to Stokes and his fellow students, it was their path to a better life.

Students on Strike is an evocative first-person narrative from a period of radical change in American history. Stokes recounts the planning of the student walkout, the secret meetings, the plot to send the principal on a wild goose chase after "truant" students, and the strategy to boycott classes until conditions improved. The author recalls the challenges in persuading teachers and parents to support the strike, and the intimidation that came in the form of threats and a cross-burning on school grounds. Archival illustrations from Stokes’ scrapbook add to the emotional impact of his story. The narrative follows the course of the lawsuits filed by the NAACP, which would became part of the historic Brown v Board of Education ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court and the subsequent end to segregation in America.

John Stokes grew up as one of six children on a small farm in Kingsville, VA. After high school, he served two years in the U.S. Army, before graduating from Virginia State University. Powerful book for teens

This book really brings the era of segregation to life for students in middle or high school. It also demonstrates the Brown v. Board was not a simple ruling in 1954, but the beginning of a decades-long struggle for racial equality in the schools. One of the interesting aspects of the story in Prince Edwards County was that the change was led by the students themselves. I would recommend it for educators teaching the civil rights era, because it does teach more about the experience than a textbook ever could.

I would suggest this book along with Andrew Heidelberg's account of when Norfolk, Virginia's schools closed for an entire semester in 1958-1959. When Andrew was one of the 17 African-American students who were ordered by a judge to be let into white schools, Governor Almond ordered that those schools be closed based on the state constitution, which prohibited whites and blacks from attending the same school. That year 10,000 children were barred from attending school simply because politicians feared 17 black children going to white schools. The Norfolk 17 and the R.R. Moton protests are important events in the desegregation of American schools, and the stories of these students are great educational materials.

Perfect for high school

I assigned this book for summer reading. I can write all sorts of lessons and do all sorts of activities to teach the Jim Crow Era, but this book did more to help my students understand the overt racism in America after the Civil War. They have grown up in a time of multiculturalism and diversity. The idea that students could be denied a proper education because of the color of their skin is a foreign idea. Because this story is told from the perspective of someone their age, they approached this book differently. They appreciated that it was not the usual history book, but a true story that grabbed their attention; they forgot they were learning about American History. I highly recommend this book for all high school students. Your students will thank you.

Have you ever wondered what life was like in the Jim Crow South? Have you ever wanted to meet a person who lived in the Jim Crow South? This book, Students on Strike by John A. Stokes, will let you experience many emotions. In this book, a group of students had to stand up for their community and their county to fight segregation.

When the narrator and his twin sister Carrie were twelve years old they walked to school together. The schools they attended were only for "colored" kids, because druing this time race mattered to some people. They attended a school named Robert Russa Moton High School. Their high school was the county's only school for African Americans, located in Farmville.The one-story school was built for 180 students, but there were more than 450 pupils! Recognizing the inequalities between Moton and whites-only schools, John, with his classmate Barbara Johns, helped lead a strike for all the students in April 1951. They walked out and refused to return to class until construction began on a new high school for African Americans.

Life in the Jim Crow South was hard for blacks. You couldn't go to the same school or restaurant as whites. Between fighting for an education and hiding in the shadows, it was pretty rough. In the text it states, "Did you ever wonder what it would be like to buy shoes and clothes without being able to try them on to see if they fit right?" (pg. 23). This really stood out for us because that doesn't happen today and it shows how segregated the two races were at this time. Another reason why life during this time was harsh was that, "Money didn't matter in the Jim Crow South. Color came first." (pg. 24). There was a variety of Jim Crow laws like these, that enforced segregation. Blacks were also forced to use different water fountains and different movie theaters. There was also violence against the blacks, such as burning crosses, threats, and some were often severely injured or even killed.

John A. Stokes wrote this book because he wanted to tell readers how they separated the races in the South during this time, and how black people were treated. He also wanted us to remember what happened in the past, and he didn't want us to forget about the Jim Crow South, so we won't do it all over again. As an adult, John A. Stokes was a success in the teaching profession before retiring as a principal in 1994. John A. Stokes received multiple awards and recognitions due to his stance for the rights of all people.

As each chapter unfolds this book surprises and wows the reader with this true historical story of the author's experiences in life. This book would be perfect for middle schoolers. Not only did we like it, but we are almost positive that every other middle schooler that reads this will fall in love with it, too! The vocabulary is mostly for middle schoolers and there are some inappropriate parts for younger children. John A. Stokes uses words that elementary children wouldn't understand. For example, words like social injustice and nonsegregation/integration. Here's a quote from a poem John's teacher read him: "Look not at the face nor the color of the person's skin, but look at the heart which is deep within. For the face and the skin will one day fade away, but the deeds of a good person will never decay. " This book has many surprising turns and twists that leave you on the edge of your seat! We highly recommend!

After reading this we truly hope you get the chance to read this wonderful book. John stood up for what he believed in and it shows how hard people worked to get to where we are today and to make a difference.

Herbert S. Klein is the author of 22 books and 163 articles in several languages on Latin America and comparative themes in social and economic history. Among these books are The Atlantic Slave Trade, 2nd edition (2010) and four studies of slavery, the most recent of which are Slavery and the Economy of S�o Paulo, 1750-1850 (co-author, 2003), African Slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean (co-author, 2008) and Slavery in Brazil (co-author, 2009), as well as four books on Bolivian history. He has also published books on such diverse themes as The American Finances of the Spanish Empire, 1680-1809 (1998), A Population History of the United States (2004) and Hispanics in the United States Since 1980 (co-author, 2010).

Valuable to any traveler to Bolivia

I read Herbert Klein as I traveled, through Bolivia. The first five chapters (Pre-Columbian through the Creation of a Nation State 1841) enriched my visits to Sucre, Potosi, Oruro, and La Paz. Though the text is not intended for the average tourist, it is valuable to any traveler who has more than a passing curosity about this unusual, provocative country.

Herbert Klein is Profossor of Lain American History at Columbia and his writting style reflects this. "A Concise Short History of Bolivia" reads like a college text book, jammed with dates, famous and obsure names, events and the obicucious commentary. It is evident that Klien has a sharp grasp of Bolivian politics and ecomnomics, and his comments bring light to the the plight and oppression that the people of Bolivia have endure. No where in South America have the poor been as exploited as they have in Bolivia.

The leaders of Bolivia have consistantly placed the hopes for an economic renewal in Bolivia on one major export (first silver, then tin, now gas). They have not learned from history. They exploit one non-renewable resource, and spend the money (that doesn't first go into the pockets of corrupt politians and their cornies) on bigger government building, a larger militiary (Bolivia, a land locked nation still supports a Navy) and squander the people's future. Herbert Klein clearly show how history documented this. Saddly, it is happening again today with the newly found reserves of LPG.

After visiting Potosi and its infamious mines of 'Cerro Rico', a huge cone shaped mountain where over 300 mines exist to extract silver, I was perplexed to find that Klein does not mention that over 8 million, million! men have suffered and died mining this mountain since 1545 when the silver was discovered. Klein glosses over this fact, choosing not to elucidate how the Spanish Crown was responsible for the genenocide, yes genenocide, of the indigious poplulation. Strikingly, Klien is silent. I sensed in reading this history text he did not want to rock any boats, and instead choose a text that would be "acceptable" for any college class (including those in Spain)... Viva the status quo!

That said, the text is strongly recommended for any student of South American history, Bolivia and for those that are planning more than a few days in this wonderfully obscure country.

I grabbed this book as we packed our things and headed to the hospital for my baby's birth. I don't believe I would have read it otherwise. But I had nearly two days and while my wife and baby slept, I read.

The writing is tedious--single sentence paragraph after single sentence paragraph. Klein often repeats his ideas and his historical summaries. It is as if he knows that the previous paragraphs lack clarity, and he circles around for another go.

But the worse part is that Klein leaves out all the things that make history interesting. There are no personal stories or anecdotes. He handles famous Bolivian figures like Simon Pati�o, once the wealthiest man in the world, by looking at his land holdings and his mining operations. He does not examine the man himself. He glosses over entire regimes, barely touching on known and well documented atrocities. He does not draw connections between Bolivia and the rest of South America, does not mention the influx of Jews feeing Nazi Germany (nearly all of whom left after the war). Only a few paragraphs mention slavery (both Indian and African).

There are not many books about Bolivia. And I understand why. There are more people in Manhattan than all of Bolivia. However, its history is fascinating. It is a history of grand failures. Though Klein's book did fill-out my understanding of Bolivian history, it failed to do the place justice. There is no magic in Klein's history, no personality. The tragedy of the place is lost in long circular sentences and pedestrian historical examinations. The book will be a good reference should I ever need one, but I would not recommend reading it through.

As a college student doing research on Bolivia, this text provided an excellent framework for my overall understanding of Bolivia's development. The book is both accurate and interesting, and provides a broad overview that includes virtually every important development in Bolivian history. There is also an excellent bibliography. Excellent resource, highly recommended
