"Hurd offers a representative survey of 29 women who became directors in a film industry (both in the US and abroad) that never welcomes women directors. She begins with Dorothy Arzner, who transitioned from silents to talkies and directed 17 Hollywood films, and Ida Lupino, an accomplished actor who directed films noirs and other film genres along with many television shows from 1949 to 1966. Toward the end of the 20th century, Hollywood was finally accepting women directors for mainstream films, and in this era Hurd discusses Nora Ephron, Kathryn Bigelow, Mimi Lederer, and others. In looking at independent, experimental, and documentary film, Hurd lists experimenter Maya Deren, Mary Harron and her wonderfully bizarre films, and documentarian Barbara Kopple. A chapter on international film highlights Jane Campion, Agnes Varda, Leni Riefenstahl and her beautifully edited Nazi documentaries, and Lina Wertmuller with her satiric comments on masculine ego and its drive for power. Good as introduction, but less good as a reference book

The book explains the momentum, heat and mass transfer in a quite accessible form. It is well organized and the reader will find quite quickly, what (s)he needs. The book is very pedagogic. It is devoted to the heat transfer theory. Consequently, it contains only a few experimental correlations. I would recommend it for the undergraduate and graduate students. The people concerned with the industrial applications will need to accompany it by a handbook, which provides heat transfer correlations in specific cases.

Suzanne Marshall is the author of bedtime stories and stories for kids that are positive and uplifting. Suzanne is passionate about promoting self-esteem and self-soothing techniques in kids. She uses positive affirmations to help kids cope with problems and stressful situations.

An honors graduate of Smith College, Suzanne has been a produced playwright, prize-winning videographer, and teacher. She loves to read, especially before bedtime!

This is an inspiring book of bedtime affirmations -- personalized for girls named Olivia. High quality writing with great photographs of sleeping animals. NOTE: this is a soft cover book, not a hardcover. Personalized hardcover books usually cost above $30. Highly recommend if you're looking for very positive, healthy, and good books for kids.

Excellent bedtime story! As every parent knows, bedtime can be a challenge, and it hasn't been easy finding soothing bedtime stories for my daughter. This book is perfect. My daughter loves the repetition of her name and the positive affirmations. It's been a great way for her to end her day.

An authority on Hinduism and comparative religion, Coward (Univ. of Victoria) here revises his 1985 survey of the great religions' approaches to pluralism by updating chapters, adding the Baha'i faith, and revising his conclusions. He examines the response of six religions to pluralism and the future of religious dialog. The only criticism of this work is that it oversimplifies complexities and, in the Baha'i case, may not have understood the underlying worldview that permits both respectful dialog and the search for converts. Runzo (Chapman Univ. & Cambridge Univ.), who is widely published on religious pluralism, reviews the major arguments and issues in religious philosophy from a global perspective. He covers the various approaches that religions take toward each other and toward arguments for and against God's existence, theodicy, life after death, science, morality, and love. Helpful text boxes present the main philosophical arguments. Both authors succeed admirably in conveying to the student and educated lay reader the philosophical and practical issues raised by the interconnected world in which many religions coexist. Good general introduction

Runzo's introduction is not complex and his philosophy of religion arouses interest in Buddhist and Hindu philosophies for those finding themselves absorbed in Western religious traditions, which are lumped together with little differentiation between them. The weight of the global religious perspectives are discussed from the Buddhist and Hindu viewpoints. (with respect to their nuances) This is a welcome approach to take.

Runzo defines religion simply as 'a search for meaning beyond materialism' [13] different from philosophy in that it holds 'that the examined life points to a Transcendent.' [19] I suppose that is an acceptable definition. The hurdle of religious pluralism is not skirted, despite the unifying factor of the belief in a Transcendent and perceived interaction with it in the World Religions. But the cardinal importance of philosophy for any religious worldview is thrust in this way:

'Insofar as theology or philosophical religion strives to present a rational case, rather than to be merely polemical or poetic, it will need to conform to the clarificatory demands of coherence, cognitive significance, intelligibility, and parsimony, and to the justificatory demands of plausibility, consistency, logic of proof, and provision of firm evidential support -- and this is to engage in doing philosophy.' [26]

Here you will find theistic and non-theistic religious metaphysics; the classical arguments for monotheism, counterbalanced with the logical and probabilistic formulations of the argument from evil (along with theism's theodician and libertarian answers to these); religious epistemology and personal experiences; properly basic beliefs; metaethics; the oft-purported friction between science and religion; value and meaning; the problem of predicating the Transcendent; the afterlife; Pascal's Wager as a departure point for the rationality of accepting some form of religion (Runzo does not endorse this); and love and how it relates to the Transcendent.

How might one summarize the merits of this book? If one comes to this subject hostile to religion they will perhaps walk away after reading Runzo a little more open-minded. If they come from some particular religious tradition they might well be moved to appreciate the reality of religious pluralism in our world, less restricted in their religious outlook. I esteem this a worthy, accessible (short) introduction to the philosophy of religion.
